ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT
The port of Nagoya has recently
become the world's tenth largest port for export and import business.
The Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City have endeavered to improve
the port, not only to meet the demand, but also for urban design.
The Port Authority Administration Company conceived an idea to
build a museum from two reasons. The first, is to educate young
people to understand the function of ports and navigation, and
the second is to improve the environment along the water front.
The building consists of an observatory which commands the view of the sea and the city, a marine and navigation museum, a restaurant, passenger acceptance area, Port Authority office, and others. The Administration Company initiated a design competition in order to get tatal community involvement. The first stage of the project was citizen (wide-open) competition, and the second was professional competition.
The theme is "Gate" (for the sea and for the city). Two axes penetrated the building; one is the city axis which originated in the Shogunate age, the other is a north and south orientation, which is expressed by the observatory. A large pitched roof penetrating into the building from the front to the back, symbolizes the japanese entrance.
In my graduation project, I proposed that the master plan utilize the area as an international trade and convention center as well as a park and educational facilities for the community. The project won the Grand Prize at the Nagoya Institute of Technology in 1981.
