„The aim of the project

Acte Kobe is a non-profit organization composed of Japanese, French and Swiss artists. It was founded in direct response to the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake. Right after the earthquake, we began to reflect on the nature of cultural events. And we, the artists in Kobe, began to reflect upon the issue of the relation between society and the arts. Is art of any use to people who are suffering? Was our work as artists merely public entertainment or was there something that we could do to help?
In Marseille, France, shortly after the earthquake, more than 150 artists got together to do a benefit event for KobeÕs artists. We welcomed their support and their message warmed our hearts. Following this event, Acte Kobe, a similar event took place in Bern Switzerland - Acte Kobe 2.
Since 1996 we have been engaged in an exchange program with artists in France and Switzerland and members of AKJ have traveled to Marseille and Bern, to participate in various artistic programs produced by Acte Kobe France. Through these experiences we have come to imagine the possibility of a society where we can feel true life and spiritual richness through art. We think that it is worth presenting these ideas to the people in our society.
In the summer 2001, with the help of many non-profit organizations and foundations, great artists from France and Switzerland will come to Kobe, as members of Acte Kobe France. Their presence in Kobe will be their first since the earthquake. We plan to organize with them programs of music concerts, dance performances, exhibitions, workshops and talk sessions. And our focus is on Art in Society. We hope that these practical programs will be the opportunity for us and the people in our society to think about art in our everyday lives. The Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake made us think of the meaning of art, what we have been doing in our society. Though we realize that this project alone may not change anything in our society, we still think it is very important to present these ideas as we experienced them in Marseille and Bern .
