　New-York sporting circles are having a genuine sensation in a contest between two of the famous Greco-Roman wrestlers, Prof. William Miller, the champion of Australia and the Pacific coast, and Mr. Andre Christol, the champion of France and Spain. Prof. Miller, since his debut as a professional wrestler, has not met with a single defeat, and his herculean proportions fairly forbid the idea of seeing such a man stretched upon his back by another human being, but Mr. Christol, the famous “masked man,” who competed with such wondrous success against all comers at the Hippodrome, Paris, during the season of 1867-8, is also claimed to be invincible in this sport, and the contest is therefore anticipated with more than ordinary interest. The exact date and place of the match will be definitely fixed at the next meeting; but, as both men are in excellent condition and eager for the fray, the date will not be later than the first week in October, and the place one of our best halls?either Irving or Tammany. At the meeting held at the office of the Turf, Field and Farm, yesterday morning, the following articles of agreement were drawn up, and $100 put up as a forfeit:

　ニューヨークのスポーツ界で正真正銘の大評判を取ったのは二人の高名なるギリシャ･ローマ式レスラーの試合である。ウィリアム･ミラー師範は豪州及び太平洋沿岸王者、アンドレ･クリストル氏は仏国及び西国王者。ミラー師範は、職業選手として「デビュー」以来、試合して一度の負けもなく、その神話の巨人の如き均整美はかくの如き男が他人に倒され大の字になるなど想像するさえ全く許さない。しかるに一方、パリの競馬場において1867年から68年の開催期の間、高名なる「覆面男」としてあらゆる挑戦者と競技して赫灼たる成功を収めたクリストル氏もまた、このスポーツにおいて無敵を主張し、それ故に試合の興味が並み以上に掻き立てられるのである。試合の正確な期日と場所とは次回の会合にて明確に決定されるであろう。しかれども両者とも優れた体調にあり闘いを熱望するが故に、期日は十月の最初の週より遅くなることはないであろう。場所は我々の最も良きホールの内の一つ、アーヴィングかタマニーとなろう。「競馬場･競技場･農場」の事務所にて昨朝行なわれた会合において、次なる契約条項が起草され、保証金として百ドルが差し入れられた。

　Articles of agreement entered into this 15th day of September, 1875, between Prof. William Miller, champion of Australia, and Andre Christol, champion of France and Spain, to wrestle in the Greco-Roman style for the championship of America and $500 a side, (total stakes, $1,000,) the match to be decided under the following rules;
　1.　No hold shall be allowed lower than the waist.
　2.　The wrestling to be with open hands.
　3.　No striking, scratching, or gouging shall be allowed.
　4.　Clasping hands shall not be allowed. (Clasping hands means that the wrestlers shall not clasp one of their own hands within the other, nor interlace their fingers, but they are allowed to grasp their own wrist to tighten their hold around their opponent.)
　5.　The wrestlers must have their finger-nails cut close, and they must wrestle either in soft shoes or socks.
　6.　A fall shall be declared when either man has been fairly put upon his back, with two shoulders on the ground at the same time.
　7.　In the event of the wrestlers rolling over each other, the one whose shoulders shall touch-the ground first, as under rule 6, shall be deemed to have lost one fall.
　8.　Fifteen minutes’ rest shall be allowed between the bouts, and either man failing, to appear when time is called shall be considered to have lost the match.
　9.　This match shall be decided by either party to this agreement winning three fair falls out of five.
　10.　Each wrestle, shall appoint one judge; the judges in the event of a disagreement to submit the question to the referee, who shall decide between them.
　11.　Mr. Fred J. Engelhardt is hereby mutually agreed upon as referee, and all questions of fair hold or fair fail shall be submitted to him, and his decision shall be final and without appeal.
　12.　Fifty dollars a side is hereby placed in the hands of F. J. Engelhardt as a forfeit, to be transferred to the hands of the final stakeholder, who shall be chosen on Friday, Sept. 24, at 10 A. M., when the time and place of the match shall also to agreed upon, and $200 a side be put up, the remaining $250 to be posted the evening prior to the match.

　契約条項は次の如し、来たる1875年9月15日、師範ウィリアム･ミラー、豪州王者と、アンドレ･クリストル、仏国及び西国王者との間において、ギリシャ･ローマ式レスリングの米国選手権を行なうべき事、賭け金は双方五百ドルずつ（賞金総額千ドル）、試合は次なる規定に基づき決す。
　一、腰より下部を掴むは許されざる事
　ニ、両手を開いて闘うべき事
　三、打撃、引っ掻き、ないし目潰しは許されざる事
　四、手を握るは許されざる事（手を握るとは即ちレスラーの己が片手の内に今一方を握り締める、ないし指を組み合う事は許されずとの意味である。しかれども敵に掛けたる技をより締め付け強めるが為に己が手首を掴む事は許される。）
　五、レスラーは指の爪を短く切るべき事。闘う際は柔らかい靴ないし靴下を履くべき事。
　六、フォールは何れかの選手が完全に仰向けにせられ両肩を同時に着地せしめられたる時宣せられる。
　七、万一両選手が組み合いたるまま横転する際は、先に両肩を着地する者が、規定第六に基づき、一本を失うと考えられる。
　八、一本の後に十五分の休憩を許す。再開が告げられる時に間に合わず現れない者は、敗戦とみなされる。
　九、試合は双方のこの同意により勝敗を正当な三本先取の五本勝負で決する。
　十、両選手とも一名の検査役（ジャッジ）を指名する。検査役が万一不同意に付き行司（レフェリー）に物言い（クェスチョン）を提起する場合、彼らの間で協議決定すべき事。
　十一、フレッド･J･エンゲルハルト氏はこの文書により双方に行司として同意される。正当な技と反則に関する全ての物言いは彼に対して提起される。しかして最終的には彼が判定し控訴はない。
　十二、双方五十ドルずつをこの文書によりF･J･エンゲルハルトの手に保証金として渡し、それは9月24日金曜日の午前十時に選ばれる最終的な賭け金保管人の手に移されるべき事。試合の期日と場所また同意決定されるべき時、双方二百ドルずつを差し入れ、残りの二百五十ドルは試合の前夜に郵送すべき事。

　パリのレスリング・トーナメントにプロレス史上最古のマスクマン、ザ・マクスド・レスラーが出現。正体はシーバウド・バウワーThiebaud Bauerではないかとウワサされた。

　　バウワー（ボーエル）と初代覆面レスラーの名誉を争った、というクリストルのマスクマン･デビューは、ニューヨーク･タイムズの記事では1867年まで遡る、とされています。
