Miyake Loses Handicap Wrestling
Match with Welterweight Champion

三宅ハンディキャップ戦を落とす
ウェルター級王者相手に

　Tarro Miyake, a stocky, strongly muscled Japanese, who says he is jiu jitsu champion of the world, made a poor contract when he agreed to throw George Bothner three times within an hour in a catch-as-catch-can wrestling match at Brown’s Gymnasium last night, for not only did he fail to pin the American’s shoulders the prescribed number of times to the mat, but he was downed himself. The contest, being of the handicap order, ended when Bothner, with a full Nelson grip, planted both shoulders of the Nipponese solidly on the mat in 29 minutes 57 seconds. The Jap did succeed once in throwing the welterweight champion wrestler of the world, accomplishing the feat in 21 minutes 12 seconds.

　三宅太郎、柔術世界王者を称する、ずんぐりしてがっちり筋肉のついた日本人は、まずい契約をしてしまったものである。彼がジョージ･ボスナーを一時間に三度倒すことに同意したキャッチ･アズ･キャッチ･キャン･レスリングの試合はブラウンズ体育館で昨夜行われ、彼は米国人の両肩を規定の回数マットにピンすることに失敗したのみならず、彼自身が倒されてしまった。試合は、ハンディキャップを課せられて行われ、終了したのはボスナーが、フル･ネルソンに捕らえ、ニッポン人の両肩をしっかりとマットに据えた29分57秒経過時であった。日本人は一度はウェルター級世界王者を倒すことに成功、その偉業は21分12秒で成し遂げられた。　　

　That interest in wrestling here is not entirely dead was evidenced by the large crowd which witnessed this contest. The sale of tickets had to be stopped before the main exhibition was staged. Included in the crowd were half a dozen fashionably dressed women, who were just as vociferous in their praise of the clever work done by Bothner as were their men companions.

　此の地のレスリングへの興味が完全に廃れたわけではないことはこの試合に立ち会った大観衆によって証明された。入場券の販売は大トリの始まる前に止められねばならなかった。観衆には半ダースの流行服に着飾った御婦人方が含まれていて、ちょうど同伴の殿方と同じ様にボスナーの見せる妙技への称賛の声を張り上げていた。

　Throughout the early stages of the match Bothner was entirely on the defensive. Six times in the first twenty minutes, or just before he succeeded in throwing the American, Miyake secured holds on Bothner that seemed certain to prove successful. But each time the champion broke them. Wrestling with a large carbuncle on his right shoulder, Bothner was at a decided disadvantage, and his strength waned after twenty minutes of work. He was very fatigued when the Japanese gained a half Nelson and leg hold on him, and this time his efforts to break free were unavailing.

　試合の序盤の間中ボスナーはまったく守勢に立っていた。初めの二十分の内に、ないし彼が米国人を倒すことに成功するまでに六回、三宅はボスナーに技を決め成功を示すのは確実に見えた。しかし何れの場合も王者は技を解いた。右肩に大きな腫れ物を患ってのレスリングは、ボスナーにはっきり不利であり、彼の体力は二十分の闘いの後で弱っていた。彼は日本人がハーフ･ネルソンとレッグ･ホールドを彼に掛けたときにはとても疲れていて、今回は技を解き自由になるための彼の努力は無駄になった。

　The American appeared much stronger than his swarthy opponent after the five-minute rest, and after three minutes of rough wrestling he took the offensive. As soon as he became the aggressor he secured a firm grip on the Oriental, and by superior knowledge of the game, not by superior strength, Bothner gradually pressed the shoulders of his rival to the mat, and with a supreme effort he pinned them there long enough to be proclaimed winner by Referee Joe Rogers.

　米国人が彼の色黒な敵よりも強い所を見せたのは五分間の休憩の後で、三分間の荒っぽいレスリングの後に彼は攻撃に転じた。攻撃者になるや否や彼は東洋人にしっかり掴みを決め、競技の知識の優勢によって、力の優勢によってではなく、ボスナーは徐々に好敵手の両肩をマットに押し付け、力を振り絞ってその両肩をそこに充分に長くピンしたのでレフェリーのジョー･ロジャースによって勝者に宣せられた。

　The Jap outweighed Bothner by many pounds, and after he had been defeated his anger became aroused, and he made a dash at the American. He was hurled back to his corner by Rogers, who weighs more than 300 pounds.

　日本人はボスナーより数ポンド重く、そして負かされた後で怒り心頭に発して、米国人に突進した。彼は体重が300ポンドを超える、ロジャースによって放り投げられ自分のコーナーまで戻された。

　Will Bingham, wrestling instructor of the New York A. C., twice forced Raku Kato, another Japanese, to quit in a jiu jitsu match, which preceded the main event.
