Loose North Country style ― “Catch as catch can.” There were ten entries for this. Leckie threw White, Smith threw Grater, Ruston threw Brooks, Manderson threw Campbell, and Welsh threw Robertson. In the second round, Ruston stood and Leckie fell. Welsh stood and Manderson fell, leaving Smith odd man. In the third round Smith stood and Ruston fell, leaving Welsh odd man. Welsh and Smith had therefore to wrestle off for the first prize, which Welsh secured by cleverly throwing Smith twice in succession. Smith took second prize. Boys Wrestling For Subscription Prize. There were eight entries. W. Hogg won the first prize : M’William the second; and Black the third. Black was a very small but plucky boy. レスリング、16歳以下の少年向け 自由型北国式―「掴めるように掴め」。 これには十人の参加者があった。レッキーはホワイトを投げ、スミスはグレイターを投げ、ラストンはブロックスを投げ、マンダーソンはキャンプベルを投げ、そしてウェルシュはロバートソンを投げた。二回戦では､ラストンが勝ちレッキーが負け。ウェルシュが勝ちマンダ―ソンが負け、スミスは不戦勝。三回戦ではスミスが勝ちラストンが負け、ウェルシュが不戦勝。ウェルシュとスミスが従って一等賞を賭けて決勝戦を行い、ウェルシュが巧みにスミスに二度投げを決めることに成功した。スミスは二等賞を得た。 寄附の賞金を賭けた子供レスリング。 八人の参加者があった。W･ホッグが一等賞を勝ち取った。マクウィリアムが二等、そしてブラックが三等。ブラックはとても小さいが元気のよい子供であった。 “North Country style”（北国式）がカンバーランド･スタイルで、“Loose North Country style”（自由型北国式）がキャッチ･アズ･キャッチ･キャン･スタイル。そう単純に考えることは、正しくないようです。やはり“stood”（立っていた）が勝者、“fell”（倒れた）が敗者となっているので、寝技なしのカンバーランドと同じ決着方法であろうかと思います。 カンバーランドは胸と胸を合わせ、顎を相手の右肩に乗せ、右四つに相手の背中を抱いて両手を組んで始めます。倒れる他、組み手がはずれても負けになります。子供には体力的にきついという理由からか？自由な組み手を許した。それが「ルース（緩い）」、「掴めるように掴め」の意味ではないかと想像します。つまり「キャッチ･アズ･キャッチ･キャン」は、ここではスタイルの名前ではなく、コンディション（条件、規定）としての表現かと考えます。 結果的に、アイスランドの「グリマ」に似たルールになっていたかと想像します。 なお､紹介した記事の更に下の方には、コーニッシュ･アンド･デボンシャー･スタイルの試合の記述もあります。 ｛グリマ｝ …ルールは英国のカンバーランド同様、投げで決まるが、間あいや組み方が自由なのが違いで、英国ローカル･レスリングの源流だといわれている。 （「プロレス大研究」田鶴浜弘著、講談社刊 より） THE CALEDONIAN GATHERING. Hoare took first, and Robertson the second prize ; Tyson having tossed with Robertson for the throw, and lost. … レスリング、コーニッシュとデボンシャー式。賞金を稼げない水準に10シリングが与えられる。一等賞、6ポンド。二等、2ポンド。この種目が非常に大きな興味を持って見られたのは､競技者の激闘、特にタイソンとロバートソンの一戦によるものだった。ホアレが一等を取り、ロバートソンが二等賞だった。タイソンはロバートソンを投げるべく動き回ったが、敗れた。 （後略） 少年向けのルース･ノース･カントリー･スタイルの他、コーニッシュ･デボンシャー・スタイルが行われています。“prizetakers”は賞金稼ぎ（プロのレスラー）かとも思いましたが、単純に一等賞、二等賞をもらえた人、という意味で、賞金をもらえないレベル（で負けた）の人にも10シリング差し上げます、という文意と解釈しました。 なお､紹介した記事の上の方（初日の終わり頃）には、ノース･カントリー･スタイルの試合の記述もあります。 ※追記2010.9.20 同じオタゴの別の新聞にもこの大会の記事がありました。 CALEDONIAN SOCIETY OF OTAGO. Tuapeka Times, 9 January 1873 http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=TT18730109.2.14&e=-------10--1----0-- ノース･カントリー･スタイルについては、どちらの新聞でも初日の記事の終わりの方（位置で言うと真ん中辺り）に記載があります。 “Otago Witness”では Wrestling. ― North Country style (slack odds). … “Tuapeka Times”では Wrestling, North Country style, slack hands : … とあります。“slack”は辞書を引くと「ゆるい（loose）、たるんだ」とあり、少年向けの“Loose North Country style”との類似が感じられます。“hand”には「手」の他、「仕方、やり方、方法」という意味もあります。“odds”は「勝ち目」「可能性」「配当率」といった意味で訳しづらいですが、「奇妙なこと、風変わりなこと」という意味もある名詞としての“odd”の複数形と考えますと、「条件を緩めた変則ルール」というような意味なのかもしれません。 Page 15 Advertisements Column 2 Otago Witness , 6 December 1873 http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=OW18731206.2.44.2&e=-------10--1----0-- Notices. For the All-comers, there were only two competitors ― Fothergill and George Robertson ― the latter taking the first prize. Youths’ Wrestling Match. North Country style. First prize, £3 ; second, £1 10s ; third, 10s. There was a large number of entries for this event. The conditions were “ catch as catch can.” but the competitors elected to wrestle with close grips. Gorby took the first prize, T. Ramage second, and W.
