Apollo made a rather bad start by denouncing the match which had just concluded. He remarked that no good judge looked upon it as scientific wrestling, nothing but an exhibition of brute strength. This brought cries of “shame” and “disgraceful” from parts of the house, and for some time Apollo could not get a hearing. When he eventually secured this he announced that he had lodged £100 at the “Sports man” office, and he was prepared to wager this amount to £50 that Tani would beat Hackenschmidt. The last-named came forward and was understood to say that he would be only too pleased to wrestle Tani in the Graeco-Roman or catch-as-catch-can style. As to the Japanese method, it was altogether strange to him.
