AN EXCITING BOUT. ワースのサーカスで柔術。 血沸き肉躍る勝負。 At the conclusion of the programme at Wirth Bros.’ Circus on Saturday night, Professor Stevenson, of Sydney, and Mr. Albert Monier, who performs at the circus as a strong man, engaged (says the “Telegraph” of May 10) in a ju-jitsu contest for a purse of £75. The struggle was intensely exciting, and at one moment the feelings of the audience were so worked up that a serious disturbance was only averted by the timely appearance of the police. ワース兄弟サーカスの土曜の晩の番組の大取りにて、シドニー在の、スティーヴンソン師範と、サーカスに怪力男として出演中の、アルベルト･モニエ氏とが、闘ったのは（「テレグラフ」紙5月10日付によれば）賞金75ポンドを賭けた柔術競技であった。闘いは激しく血沸き肉躍るもので、一時は観衆の感情が余りに高揚しすぎて容易ならない騒動が時を得た警官隊の登場によってやっと防がれた程であった。 The ringmaster announced the conditions of the contest. Each man was allowed to hit, scratch, bite, pull by the hair, kick sideways, gouge, or strangle. Practically the only forbidden action was a straight kick. Mr. M. P. Adams, of Melbourne, acted as referee, and Mr. Clancy was timekeeper. The duration of actual wrestling was to be 15 minutes. 舞台監督が競技の条件を告げた。両者は打撃、引っ掻き、噛み付き、髪を引っ張ること、横蹴り、目をえぐること、ないし首絞めが許された。実際上唯一の禁止行為は前蹴りだけであった。メルボルン在の、M･P･アダムス氏が、行司を務め、クランシー氏が計時係りであった。実際のレスリングの制限時間は15分となっていた。 Before starting Professor Stevenson complained that he had contracted to meet Arthur Franz, whereas Albert Monier was appearing in his place. He claimed that another £10 should be added to the stakes in consequence. After a consultation, Messrs. Wirth Bros. offered to make the addition to the prize. 開始前スティーヴンソン師範は彼が立ち合うべく契約したのはアーサー･フランツであったのに、アルベルト･モニエが代わりに出て来たことに不満を訴えた。彼はその結果更に10ポンドを賭け金に加えるべく要求した。協議の後、ワース兄弟各氏が賞金の追加をなすべく申し出た。 At the word “go” both men began to circle much in the fashion of ordinary wrestlers, but the similarity to familiar methods ceased when Stevenson dealt Monier a smack on the face, on attack which the latter returned by trying to kick Stevenson’s legs from under him with his heel. A clinch followed and they went to the ground. Several times in quick succession each threw his opponent over his head or shoulder to the ground, a movement which was warmly applauded by the audience, but when Monier started feeling for Stevenson’s eyes with his thumb for the purpose of dissuading that gentleman from trying to break his (Monier’s) neck between his knees, or when Stevenson hit Monier vigorously across the loins, to alter Monier’s intention of dislocating his thumb, the ideas of fair-play of the more conservative of the audience were shocked, and the cheering was equally balanced with hoots. 両者は今や自分達が実際互角に競っていることを認め、そこから先は全力を闘いに注入した。幾度か矢継ぎ早に互いに敵を頭ないし肩越しに地面に投げ付け、観客に熱烈な拍手喝采を受ける攻防もあったが、モニエがスティーヴンソンの目を、その紳士が両膝に挟んだ彼の（モニエの）首を折ろうとするのを思いとどまらせるために親指で探り始めた時、あるいはスティーヴンソンが親指を動かそうとするモニエの意志を変えるべく、モニエの腰の裏を力強く打った時、より保守的な観衆のフェア･プレイの概念は衝撃を与えられ、しかして歓声は野次と等しく拮抗したのであった。 Five minutes from the start Stevenson secured a master-hold and Monier yielded. A few minutes were allowed to rest, then the second round commenced. A good deal of footwork was used, and the men gradually edged towards the side of the ring. A clinch followed, and resulted in both tripping over the edge of the wooden ring-bank. Monier was uppermost, and lifting Stevenson in the air, proceeded to thump his body on the wood. By an adroit movement the latter contrived to free himself, and clutching Monier by the shoulders threw him outside the ring. The referee at once proceeded to separate them, but meanwhile a section of the audience began to hoot, and about a dozen ring-assistants rushed across the ring and forcibly tore the men apart. The result was greeted with tremendous cheering. 競技がリングで再開され、間もなくモニエがアームロックを決めて二本目の勝者となった。その結果はものすごい歓声で迎えられた。 The third round lasted out the remainder of the fifteen minutes, neither one gaining a decisive position. The audience swarmed down to the ringside, hooting and cheering, but the police and attendants kept it clear, and when the principals left for their dressing-rooms the crowd gradually melted away. またもや騒動が起りそうに見えた。観衆は群れをなしてリング脇に下り、野次ったり歓声を上げたりしたが、警官隊と案内係達が彼らを寄せ付けず、主役達が控室へと去って行くと群衆は次第に散って行った。 When seen afterwards, Mr. Adams said it was the most exciting contest he had ever refereed. He had had some ten years’ experience, and recently at Ballarat had given 70 decisions in one tournament, but on no occasion had he seen a harder struggle than this one had been. Explaining the rules governing the contest, he said that the object was not to try for a fall as in ordinary wrestling, but to obtain a hold which would compel the other man to yield. The kidney hit, which Stevenson used, was quite permissible. It was dealt with the edge of open hand, in the same way that the “kidney punch” was given in boxing, and was used to make an opponent relax his grip. 後に面会の際、アダムス氏は彼がかつて行司をした内でこれが最も刺激的な競技であったと語った。彼はおよそ十年に渡る経験を持ち、最近ではバララットにおいて一大会に70試合を裁いたが、今回より激しい闘いを見る機会はなかった。その競技を統制する規定について説明すれば、彼曰くその目的は通常のレスリングにおけるが如き一本を求めることにあらずして、他者に降参を強いる技を得ることであると。スティーヴンソンが用いた、腎臓打ちは、全く許されていた。それは開いた手の縁で、ボクシングにおいて「腎臓パンチ」を食らわすのと同じやり方で打たれ、敵の握りを緩めさせるために用いられた。 Professor Stevenson said that he had had a difficult man to beat. “Soon after we started I got a double wrist and shoulder-joint lock on his arm, which would have resulted in any ordinary man having his shoulder dislocated had he struggled. But Monier avoided it by turning what I would have thought to be an impossible somersault. I should be glad to meet him again.” スティーヴンソンは倒し難い相手であったと語った。「我々が闘い始めて間もなく我は彼の腕を取って手首と肩関節を二重に決めた。それは通常いかなる者ももがけば肩を脱臼させられる結果となる技だった。しかしモニエは我にはあり得ない宙返りと思えた反転によってそれを避けた。彼とは喜んで再戦したい。」 Monier stated that he was properly a Cumberland and Greco-Roman wrestler, but had a knowledge of ju-jitsu. He admitted that Stevenson had greater experience and knowledge about ju-jitsu than he, but he thought himself stronger and quicker in his movements.
