Scene at a Music Hall. レスラー達の殴り合い。 音楽堂での場面。 A wrestling match at the Birmingham Hippodrome was followed by a stand-up fight between the combatants. バーミンガム競技場でのレスリング試合は選手同士の立っての殴り合いに至った。 The match was between Zybsco, the Galician, who is to wrestle Hackenschmidt at Olympia, in June, and “Jimmy” Esson, of Aberdeen, who recently won a tournament at the Alhambra. The conditions of the contest were that the Scotsman should stand up for 15 minutes, and should receive a sovereign for every minute over 10. 試合はズビスコ、七月に、ハッケンシュミットとオリンピアでレスリングすることになっている、ガリシヤ人と、「ジミー」エッソン、アバディーン出身、近頃のアルハンブラでの大会の優勝者、との間で行われた。競技の条件はスコットランド人が15分間立っているべきこと、そして10分を越えたら一分毎にソヴリン金貨一枚（※１ポンド）を受け取るべきことであった。 At the outset Esson adopted defensive methods and displayed great skill in circumventing his opponent. As minute after minute passed, the spectators became more and more excited, and there was a regular furore when it was announced that the ten minutes had expired. To the twelfth minute Esson held his own. Then Zybsco gradually gained the upper hand, and, finally getting a grip on the mat, forced his opponent off, bringing him to the floor and getting both shoulders fairly down. At once Mr C. B. Cochrane, Zybsco’s manager, advanced to the combatants, and, patting Zybsco on the shoulder, declared him the winner. Esson sprang to his feet, and was evidently very much dissatisfied at the decision. He gesticulated wildly for a few seconds, and then, picking up the referee, threw him bodily into the arms of the time-keeper. Zybsco interposed, and endeavoured to hustle Esson off the stage. Esson, however, dealt Zybsco a terrific “header,” following it up with furious blows left and right. Zybsco at first contented himself with warding off the blows, but the affair quickly developed into a stand-up fight between the two men, lasting for a full minute. At the end of that time Zybsco, with both eyes badly blacked, carried Esson, who also was much bruised, bodily off the stage. The huge audience meanwhile were in a state of wild excitement, and considerable disorder broke out, cries arising of “You’re not in America now!” Quiet being restored, Mr Cochrane explained that under Graeco-Roman rules the throw was legitimate off the mat, if a hold was gained on it and continued. Mr Cochrane at once asked anyone understanding Graeco-Roman style to come forward and officiate, and the incident closed. The manager of the Hippodrome had previously handed £4 to Esson. エッソンは脚光に近付き、そして曰く我も全く喜んで続行したい、もし中立な行司が任命されるならばと。コクラン氏は直ちに誰かグレコ･ローマン･スタイルを知る者が名乗り出て任に就くよう求めたが、事は終わった。競技場の支配人は前もって4ポンドをエッソンに手渡していた。 キャッチ･アズ･キャッチ･キャンではアルハンブラ劇場でのヘビー級トーナメントに優勝したエッソンも、グレコ･ローマンではハンディキャップ戦しかできないほど、スタニスラウス･ズビスコとは格の違いがあったのでしょうか。もっとも気後れするどころか、このポーランドの大豪と殴り合いをするのですから大した度胸です。至って気が短いように感じられます。ボクサーでもあったそうですから殴り合いには自信があったのでしょうが、KOされずにやり返したズビスコも大したものだ、というべきでしょうか。もめた原因は、マットをはずれた床上でのピン･フォールが成立するかどうか、という所にあったようです。 ﾒﾆｭｰﾍﾟｰｼﾞ「前田光世を破った男 ジミー･エッソン」へ戻る |
