　For several weeks past great interest has been felt in certain circles regarding a match which had been made between Professor Miller, of Melbourne, a famous athlete and wrestler, and Laurence Foley, of Sydney, who is well known as being our champion boxer and an expert at all athletic sports. All shades of society manifested some interest in the contest, especially as it was understood that Messrs. Miller and Foley would oppose each other with ordinary boxing-gloves. Many doubts were expressed that the contest would not come off ; and when the Exhibition building was refused for the display, and the managers were unable to secure the Randwick racecourse for the purpose, the contestants were compelled to resort to the only available place in the city, viz., the Academy of Music, in Castlereagh-street.

When the sparring match did come off yesterday afternoon, the hall was crammed to its utmost holding capacity by an audience which may be fairly said to represent the country generally, for there were present legislators, lawyers, doctors, and business men of the city, all of whom manifested the deepest interest in the proceedings. The glove encounter was fought under the Marquis of Queensberry’s rules. The ring placed upon the stage, in the lower end of the hall, was about 22 feet square, and was fixed with stakes and thick ropes.

The Queensberry rules provide that there shall be no wrestling or hugging, and that the rounds shall be of three minutes duration with one minute’s time. If either man fall through weakness or otherwise, he must get up unassisted, 10 seconds to be allowed him to do so, the other man meanwhile to return to his corner. When the fallen man is on his legs the round is to be resumed and continued until the three minutes have expired, and if one man fails to come to the scratch in the 10 seconds allowed, it shall be in the power of the referee to give his award in favour of the other man. The rules, which are very concise, state that, should the contest be stopped by an unavoidable interference, the referee has the power of naming the time and place for finishing it as soon as possible.

Mr. W. Forrester was appointed referee, and Mr. George Adams timekeeper. Miller was seconded by J. M. Christie, while J. Thompson performed similar duties for Foley. Each contestant, on appearing in the ring, received an enthusiastic greeting from the audience. Before commencing operations, the gloves were handed to Mr. Fosbery, Inspector-General of Police, and that gentleman approving of them, the men proceeded to prepare for the bout. The gloves, it may be stated, were small sized, and much harder than the ordinary ones.

The disparity in the size and weight of the two men was at once apparent, Miller looking a perfect Hercules alongside of Foley, who is a smart-looking middle weight between 10st. and 11st., while his opponent turned the scale at 13st. 9lb. There was little to choose between them on the score of condition, each evidently having submitted himself to rigorous training. Millar, who was one mass of muscle, is 5 feet 9 inches in height, 46 inches round the chest, 17 inches round the biceps, 13 inches round the forearm, 27 inches round the thigh, and 17 inches round the calf. Foley, who is a cleaner built man, and better below the hips than Miller, measures 36 inches round the chest, biceps 12 inches, forearm 12 inches, thigh 21 inches, and calf 15 1/2 inches. The contest lasted about three hours, during which 41 rounds were fought.

For the first three-quarters of an hour Foley forced the boxing at a great pace, driving Miller against the ropes time after time, and showing great quickness with his right hand. Miller, however, was very cautious, and quietly waited an opening to get his terrible left hand in. It was noticeable that Foley’s assault on Miller did not in the least disconcert him, and as it was equally evident he was saving his great strength. After an hour’s boxing, in which Foley had far the best of the play, he became less aggressive, and Miller then began to operate with his ponderous strength. He had previously delivered some heavy blows on Foley’s face, but now he began to take a decided lead, and at the end of two hours’ boxing Foley was virtually at his mercy.

The pace at which Foley had forced matters began to tell its tale, and Miller, who had been husbanding his strength, began to punish Foley very severely ; and even after the long exercise his arms had been subjected to, Miller’s hitting, especially with his left hand, was as straight as an arrow and as quick as lightning. It was Foley’s indomitable courage alone which enabled him to sustain the heavy blows which Miller showered upon him, and as he staggered under the incessant attack his friends saw that he was fighting a hopeless battle.

Mr. W. Forrester, the referee, asked the combatants to desist, as it was apparent Foley had had sufficient punishment. Both men, however, persisted in going on with the struggle. Foley grew weaker and weaker, and his blows became shorter and more feeble every minute. His nose was much swollen and bleeding, and his face generally puffed, while Miller was quite fresh and without a scratch. On the 37th round, Miller, with a swinging right-handed blow knocked Foley off his legs, and he repeated that operation on Foley in the 40th round. Foley could not get up, and was assisted by his second, so the contest was claimed on behalf of Miller ; but the referee giving no decision in the matter, the men faced each other again.

During the next round a couple of roughs jumped into the ring, and pretended to fight. Confusion and uproar ensued, and the police appeared and put a stop to the contest. Foley behaved throughout in the most valiant and plucky manner, despite the size and courage of his antagonist. Miller, though an ungainly boxer as to posture, is nevertheless a master of the science, and no one could be quicker or more effective with the left hand, and to back up his enormous strength he has coolness and judgment to aid him, as he invariably landed the full weight of his blow on the place desired when he lunged out. Moreover, he crouches with head forward and knees bent, while Foley is erect, with his head back, and quick and active on his legs. In dancing about, in going forward, and getting back Foley lost a deal of muscular power ; but Miller conserved his by walking round with a watchful eye and an inward determination to have strength left for a good long battle.

The contest was fairly won by Miller, and even Foley’s friends―and the roughs who injured the name of fair play must not be included among them―are agreed that Miller was far too powerful for him. Foley is a child compared to Miller in size and strength, and, though worsted last evening, he gave an exhibition of indomitable pluck which has rarely been witnessed in Sydney. The match was for a trophy of ￡500.

競技は正しくミラーによって勝利されたのであって、フォーリーの仲間達―しかしてフェア･プレイの名を傷付けた乱暴者達は彼らの中に含めてはならない―でさえミラーが彼にとってはあまりに強力すぎた事で一致している。フォーリーはミラーと比べれば体格と力において子供であり、そして、昨晩は負けたけれども、彼はシドニーにおいて滅多に見られなかった不屈の勇気を示した。試合は500ポンドのトロフィーを賭けて行われた。

　The Echo of Tuesday further says :―The referee in the glove contest between Miller and Foley met Miller and the supporters of Foley at Tattersall’s Rooms, this morning, at ten a.m., when an arrangement was entered into between the representatives of the competitors that the contest should be considered a draw. It is not positively known whether Miller received the whole of the stakes, but it is rumoured he did. If he did not, Miller’s conduct is highly generous.
