The celebrated American pug and the star of “Honest Heart and Willing Hands” did not carry away with him pleasant recollections of Australia. No one expected that the fighting actor would, and this is the way in which he wrote to a friend after he had got back safely to “God’s country.” The letter has been published in Dublin Sport :

　名高い米国人拳闘家にして「正直な心と自発的な手助け」の花形は豪州の楽しい思い出を持ち帰る事がなかった。誰もその闘う役者に期待をせず、彼が無事「神の国」に戻った後で友人に書き送った中にあるやり方とはこの事である。その手紙はダブリン･スポーツ紙で公表されている。

I wish you would make a match for me with Slavin, to come off in the latter part of September or the middle of October, for the largest purse offered, and a side bet of the greatest amount the other side will put up. You are to have sole control of the match, and no one else. All I want is a chance at this fellow Slavin. Now, I wish you would nail Slavin and his party to the cross. Whatever you do in this matter will be agreeable to me, as yon know how to make a match without any instructions. I trust you where I do not trust others, just as sincerely as I would my own father. Do not consider this flattery on my part. With the exception of Professor Miller and a few others I was treated very badly indeed in Australia. Trusting you are in good health, I remain, your friend,

　John L. Sullivan will be landing in Melbourne just about the time I am posting this. He is to be welcomed by the members of the Melbourne Athletic Club at the club-room this afternoon ; and that, I firmly believe, will be his most pleasant experience in Victoria. The play of “Honest Hearts and Willing Hands,” in which John L. appears as a village blacksmith (as the Sydney Evening News put it : “attired after the traditional manner of Irish blacksmiths, in diamond studs and all the rest of a dress suit except the coat,”) proved a veritable “frost” in Sydney ; and doubtless will do the same here. But it is not because the erstwhile Champion of the World will fail in his new vocation that I indite these words about “pleasant experience.” To speak the cold truth the accounts received from Sydney anent J. L.’s exploits and language have effectually squelched that ardent desire the generality of Victorians felt to behold the fistic wonder. If the published reports are to be believed nothing more horribly disgusting in the way of filthy expression could ever have been indulged in even during the “palmy” days of Port Arthur and Norfolk Island. As a consequence the popular opinion is that he is not wanted here. And this is the more to be regretted because I have it on irrefragable evidence (Professor W. Miller) that when in his right mind no kinder-hearted man ever drew the breath of life than John Laurence Sullivan.

　ジョン･L･サリバンがメルボルンに上陸するのはまさにわたしがこれを投函する時辺りであろう。彼はメルボルン運動クラブの会員達にクラブの部屋でこの午後歓待されるはずである。そしてそれが、わたしは固く信ずるが、彼のヴィクトリア州におけるもっとも楽しい体験となろう。「正直な心と自発的な手助け」、ジョン･Lがその中で村の鍛冶屋（シドニー･イヴニング･ニュース紙が言うように「アイルランド人鍛冶屋の伝統的な作法を目論んで、ダイヤモンドの飾りボタンと礼服の上着を除いた他の全てのもので装った、」）として現れる劇は、シドニーに本物の「寒々しさ」を提供したが、疑いなくこの地においても同じとなろう。しかしかつての世界王者がその新しい商売をしくじるであろうという事が「愉快な体験」というこれらの言葉をわたしが書いた理由ではない。冷酷な真実を言えばシドニーから受け取ったJ･Lの実績と言葉遣いについての報告はその拳の驚異を見てヴィクトリア州民の大半が感じた熱烈な願望を効果的に押しつぶした。もし公表された報告が信ずるべきものであるならばアーサー港とノーフォーク島における「全盛」時代の間でさえ汚らしい表現の仕方においてより以上にひどく胸を悪くするものに浸る事は決してできなかったであろう。結果として大衆の意見は彼がこの地で求められていないという事である。そしてこれがより残念なのはわたしが確かな証言（W･ミラー師範）によって正気の時のジョン･ローレンス･サリバンよりも優しい心の持ち主が生きて呼吸をした事はないと知るが故である。
