Say what we will about the brutalizing effect of prize fighting, there are probably not half-a-dozen in Australia who would not turn out of their way to see a fair scientific glove set-to between two such men as Miller and Foley or Farnan and Foley who are now arranging for a meeting. There is something exhilarating in watching two men trained to the highest pitch of physical perfection facing one another in a trial of skill and strength in which it is almost impossible that anything like serious injury can result. In the great match between Miller and Foley, there was little to choose between the skill and endurance of the two men, but Miller’s vast strength and weight told towards the close of the battle, and although the result was called a “draw,” everybody knows that Miller was the victor, and he is only anxious now to handle John Slogger Sullivan of America and call himself the champion of the world. In the matter of Foley and Farnan, however, there would be the chance of seeing a contest between two first-class men, the difference in whose weight is trifling, and the consequent interest in the event would be much increased. In watching a wrestling match, for instance, between the little Frenchman Victor, and either Miller or Donald Dinnie, all the sympathy is with the smaller man, and much of the pleasure of witnessing it is taken away by the feeling that the little man has all the up-hill work. No such feeling can arise in a contest between Farnan and Foley. Young athletes whose tastes lean towards scientific boxing will have an opportunity of witnessing a scientific contest, and the bruising will not be of so serious a character as often occurs in a football scrimmage, or a blow from a cricket ball.

FOLEY AND FARNAN.
フォーリーとファーナン。

　During a conversation between one of our sporting representatives and Laurence Foley in reference to the matter of expenses, the latter said that he is perfectly willing to comply with Farnan’s request for £50 ; but he (Foley) very reasonably argues that it would be unbusiness-like to send £50 expenses to the editor of the Melbourne SPORTSMAN for a contest which is to take place in Sydney. Surely Farnan would never think of sending £50 expenses to Foley if the latter elected to go to Melbourne. The sporting representative of the Sydney EVENING NEWS holds £50 in trust for Foley to give Farnan as soon as he goes into the ring.

　我々の運動記者の一人とローレンス･フォーリーとの間の対話の中で旅費の件に関して、後者が言ったのは彼が全く喜んでファーナンの要求に50ポンドで応ずる事。しかし彼（フォーリー）はシドニーに於いて行われるべき競技のためにメルボルン･スポーツマン紙の編集者に50ポンドの旅費を送金するのは実務的でなかろうと理を尽くして論ずる。確かにファーナンはもしフォーリーがメルボルンに来ると決めていたら彼に50ポンドの旅費を送金する事を決して考えないであろう。シドニー･イヴニング･ニュース紙の運動記者はファーナンがリングに入り次第彼に与えるべく50ポンドをフォーリーから預かって保管している。

　We have received a letter from Farnan, denying the statements made by Mr. J. T. Taylor about expenses. Mr. Taylor came over from Melbourne, and distinctly said, in the presence of several persons (our representative having been one of the number), that he had been deputed by Farnan to make the match under certain conditions.

　我々がファーナンから受け取った手紙は、J･T･テイラー氏が旅費について行った言明を否定している。テイラー氏がメルボルンからやって来て、幾人かの面前で（我々の記者も総員中の一人であった）、明言したのは、彼が一定の条件の下に試合を組む事をファーナンに委任されたという事であった。

　Farnan agrees to the EVENING NEWS representative holding the £50 expenses in the glove contest, and asks Foley to have articles prepared and signed, and the date of the contest definitely fixed. [Farnan will be in Sydney on Friday, when it is expected that everything will go without a hitch.]

　ファーナンはイヴニング･ニュース紙の記者がそのグローブ競技に於ける50ポンドの旅費を預かるのに同意し、フォーリーに契約条項を用意して署名を終えるよう求め、そして競技の期日は明確に固まった。[全てが障害無く進むと予期される時、ファーナンは金曜日にはシドニーにいよう。]

　The glove fight between Chris Dunn and George Powell came off on Monday last in Sydney, and ended, as might have been expected, in a fiasco. Powell had the best of the little fighting there was, and when Dunn was getting knocked out some of his supporters who rejoice in the euphonious title of the “Cow Lane Push” took possession of the ring, and stopped the fight. Foley and Farnan have at last come to terms. The latter had no money to put up, so Larry is to give the Melbourne crack £50 to fight a battle on June 12 with small gloves at a place which Foley will choose. Miller has offered to fight or box both Hicken and Farnan in New Zealand in one afternoon with a spell of an hour between.

　グローブ拳闘がクリス･ダンとジョージ･パウエルとの間でこの間の月曜日にシドニーに於いて行われたが、案の定、大失敗であった。パウエルは少しの闘いで優勢となり、ダンが打ち倒されそうになるや耳に心地良い「牛、道、押せ」の呼び方にはしゃいだ幾人かの彼の支持者達がリングを占拠して、闘いを止めた。フォーリーとファーナンはついに話がまとまった。後者は賭けるべき金がなかったため、フォーリーは6月12日に小さいグローブを着けてフォーリーの選ぶ場所で一戦交えるべくそのメルボルンの変人に50ポンドを与えることになっている。ミラーがヒッケンとファーナンの両人とニュー･ジーランドに於いて一日の午後の内に一時間の間を置いて順番に素手ないしグローブ着用で拳闘すべく申し出た。

THE ULTIMATUM.

最終条件。

　The Foley and Farnan warfare, so far as the newspapers are concerned, was brought to a close on Wednesday. Farnan, with his supporters, called at the EVENING NEWS office, and afterwards, with a sporting representative of the office, proceeded to Foley’s White Horse Hotel. Laurence Foley met his interviewers, and at once proceeded to settle matters by offering to box Farnan for £100, £200, or £1000 in 12 weeks. To this Farnan demurred, stating that he was unable to obtain the money. Foley then said that, rather than allow the Victorian to leave without giving him a chance to show his powers, he would give him £50 if he (Farnan) would box him with small gloves in about 12 weeks, at a place to be named by Foley ; the contest to come off on Tuesday, June 30. To this generous offer Farnan agreed, and articles were at once drawn up and signed.
