Foley’s athletic clubroom, on Monday night, for the purpose of tendering a benefit to Professor D’Harcourt. The proceedings opened with a smart display of boxing between the veteran D. Ingram and an amateur, followed by two heavy-weight amateurs, who boxed six good rounds. After on intermission o? five minutes, Professor Miller gave an exhibition of club swinging and heavy dumbbell lifting. This was followed by the beneficiaire lifting dumbbells. L. Foley and Professor Miller next gave a pretty exhibition with the singlesticks. Keating and Clemence wrestled catch-as-catch-can. Two of Professor D’Harcourt’s pupils then used the gloves. The evening terminated with an exhibition of foils, given by two French gentlemen. To bind this the Professor put up a deposit of £50 in the hands of the proprietors of the EVENING NEWS, and as this has not been covered up to the present time, the Professor thinks that they do not mean business, and the money has been withdrawn. The offer was a very liberal one, as should either Hicken or Farnan have beaten him he would have lost the £250. When the challenge was issued both men were in this city. They have now taken their departure. In the articles signed by Farnan’s representative small gloves are stipulated, but the Melbourne party appear to have suffered a scare since appending their signatures to the document, as they now want the show to come off with the ordinary pillows. Foley has met Jackson several times, at Chairini’s Circus, and winning each time, though Jackson showed fine science. Foley only lacks condition, but will at once go training for his match with Farnan, June 30.
