　シドニーの大立者、ラリー･フォーリーはこの時期、ボクシング興行“the boxing entertainment”を、自前の体育館で繰り返し開催していました。天敵とも言うべきビル･ファーナンを破ったトム･リースに対しては、好意があったのか、トレーナーのニュートン共々出場させていますが、リースの肩書きは「ヴィクトリア植民地王者」であり、自分は一段上の「豪州王者」を名乗り続けて、メイン･イベントも譲りませんでした。7月14日には、両王者による直接対決も実現していますが、短いラウンドの模範試合で決着はつかなかったのでしょう。
　この時は7月10、12、14日と1日おきの興行で、10日はフォーリーが出場せず、メインはリース対ニュートンでした。

　リース対ジャクソン戦の広告です。「豪州選手権」と銘打たれていますが、リースの王座をそう認めた…というわけではなく、正統な豪州王者のフォーリーが敗れずして遂に引退するのに伴い、空位になった王座を争う試合、という位置付け（少なくともシドニーのフォーリー派にとっては）だったのではないかと思います。王座の継承を正統のものとする証しとして、フォーリーは己の保持するチャンピオン･ベルトを勝者に譲り渡したのでしょう。

　AN OLD RELIC.―This morning Mr. Laurence Foley came into possession of the champion belt of New South Wales, presented to Isaac Reid, thirty nine years ago. The belt is a very excellent piece of workmanship, and was manufactured by Mr. J. J.Cohen. It has three silver plates, set oh dark blue velvet edged with silver braid, and the word “champion” appears in solid silver letters. The middle plate is about 6in long by 4in broad, and very neatly engraved. In the centre is the representation of a ring, with an athlete in the centre about to be crowned with a wreath of laurel. Underneath is an inscription which reads :―“This belt is presented to Isaac Reid, a native of Nottingham, England, as a token of the approbation in which he is held by numerous friends, who, on April 6, 1847, witnessed his manly conduct in the successful struggle with George Huff for the championship of New South Wales. Sydney, June, 1847.” The belt has been placed alongside the present gold and silver champion belt, possessed by Mr. L. Foley, and was quickly recognised by old Bill Sparke, Dave Ingram, and other lights of the P.R.

　古い記念品。―今朝ローレンス･フォーリー氏が手にしたのは新南ウェールズのチャンピオン･ベルト、アイザック･レイドに、三十九年前に贈られたものであった。そのベルトはとても優れた細工品で、製作者はJ･J･コヘン氏。それは三枚の銀板が、銀の組み紐に縁取られた暗青色のビロードの上に据えられ、「王者」という言葉が純銀の文字で見える。真ん中の板はおよそ長さ6インチ幅4インチ、とても上手に彫り込まれている。中央にはリングの彫像、一人の運動家がその真ん中で今まさに月桂樹の冠を戴かせられようとしている。すぐ下の銘文はこう読める。―「このベルトは英国、ノッティンガム生まれの、アイザック･レイドに、1847年、4月6日の、新南ウェールズ選手権を賭けたジョージ･ハフとの成功した格闘における彼の男らしいふるまいを目撃した、数多くの友人達によって彼に与えられる称賛の印として贈られる。」ベルトは現在の金と銀のチャンピオン･ベルトが並んで置かれて来て、ラリー･フォーリー氏に所有され、そして老ビル･スパーケ、デイブ･イングラム、並びに他のプライズ･リングの大家達によって直ちに本物と認められた。

運動。

　Professor Jackson, the victor in the recent boxing contest with T. Lees, the Victorian champion, will, on Saturday night, be presented by Mr. L. Foley, with the champion silver belt, held by the latter athlete. The ceremony will take place at Foley’s Gymnasium. The presentation will be made by a prominent citizen. There will be a large muster of athletes and boxers, who will assist to make up a good programme The professor will oppose the best exponent of the art to be found among those who have signified their intention of appearing.

　最近のT･リース、ヴィクトリア王者、とのボクシング競技の勝者、ジャクソン師範は、土曜の夜に、L･フォーリー氏から、後者の運動家が保持する、銀のチャンピオン･ベルトを、贈られるであろう。式典はフォーリーの体育館にて行われよう。授与はある著名な市民によってなされよう。運動家と拳闘家が大集合し、良い番組を作る手助けをしよう。師範は出場の意向を表明した者達の中で見つけられるその技芸の最高の専門家に対するであろう。

運動。

　There was a crowded house at Foley’s Gymnasium on Saturday night to witness the usual boxing entertainment and the presentation of the champion belt, given by Mr. L. Foley to the winner in the late boxing contest between Professor Jackson and T. Lees. Smith and Gorman opened the proceedings with four busy rounds, after which Murphy, champion light weight of New Zealand, and Fuller gave the audience one of the best contested bouts ever seen in the hall. So evenly were the two men matched that the referee had to declare them of equal merit. Both combatants were cheered for their pluck and determination. Then followed two scientific displays by Hickey and Nelson and M’Carty and Good, after which the event of the evening took place. The appearance of Professor Jackson upon the stage was the signal for a tumult of applause. Mr. J. Thompson, who made the presentation of the belt, expressed the great pleasure it gave him to present the trophy on behalf of Mr. Foley. The manly way Professor Jackson had behaved in the recent glove encounter had earned the admiration of all. He himself was not a supporter of Jackson on the occasion, but he could not help applauding him for the generous way in which he fought. Mr. Foley then came forward and buckled the belt round Jackson’s waist amidst tremendous cheering. Professor Jackson briefly returned thanks. The champion gold belt is still in possession of Mr. Foley, the retired champion, who was induced to offer the silver champion belt for competition for the two men who had the reputation of being the best boxers in Australia. It must be pleasing to the donor of the trophy to know that the belt his skill had won has fallen into the hands of one of his pupils. The professor was taught all he knows by Mr. Foley, who is proud of the result of his teaching. The belt, which is worth about 100 sovereigns, was manufactured in London about 40 years ago. The entertainment was concluded by a clever display of four rounds between Professor Jackson and Molloy.

　フォーリーの体育館が土曜の夜大観衆で混雑したのはいつものボクシング興行と、L･フォーリー氏によって最近のジャクソン師範とT･リースとの間のボクシング競技における勝者へ与えられる、チャンピオン･ベルトの授与式を見るためであった。スミスとゴーマンが忙しい四回戦を以って式次第を開始し、その後マーフィー、ニュー･ジーランドの軽量級王者と、フラーとがその会堂でかつて見られた内で最良の競った勝負を観衆に提供した。それ程互角に二人が拮抗したため行司は彼等に同点引分けを宣しなければならなかった。両選手は彼等の勇気と決断力とのために喝采を受けた。それからヒッキーとネルソン及びマッカーティとグッドによる二つの科学的な公開試合が続き、その後でその晩の行事が催された。ジャクソン師範の舞台上への登場が喝采の嵐のための合図であった。ベルトの授与をした、J･トンプソン氏は、フォーリー氏に代わって戦勝記念品を贈ることで彼が大いなる光栄に浴する旨表明した。最近のグローブ戦においてジャクソン師範がふるまった男らしいやり方は万人の称賛を得た。彼自身はその折にはジャクソンの支援者ではなかったけれども、彼が闘った惜しみないやり方には彼に喝采しないわけには行かなかった。フォーリー氏がそれから前に進み出てものすごい歓声の中ジャクソンの腰周りにベルトを留め金で留めた。ジャクソン師範は手短に感謝の言葉を返した。金のチャンピオン･ベルトを未だ所有するフォーリー氏、引退した王者は、豪州最高のボクサーなりとの評判のあった二人の男の間の競技のために銀のチャンピオン･ベルトを提供するよう勧められたのであった。その戦勝記念品の寄贈者にとって彼の技能が勝ち取った所のそのベルトが彼の弟子の一人の手に落ちたと知ることは愉快であるに違いない。師範は彼の知る全てをフォーリー氏より教わり、氏は己の教授の結果を誇りとする。ベルトは、およそソヴリン金貨100枚（※100ポンド）の価値があり、ロンドンにおいて約40年前に製作された。興行はジャクソン師範とモロイの間の巧みな四回戦の公開で終わりとなった。

　On Wednesday night a farewell benefit will be given at Foley’s Gymnasium to Connors, the champion wrestler, when a varied programme will be submitted for public approval. There will be other wrestling contests and some boxing.

　水曜の夜にフォーリーの体育館にて行われる送別募金興行はコナーズ、レスリング王者のためのもので、その時は変化に富んだ番組が公衆の賛意のために提示されよう。他のレスリング競技や何試合かのボクシングがあろう。
