A Graeco-Roman wrestling match for the championship and a £200 stake between Tom Cannon and George Hackenschmidt, better known as “the Russian lion,” came off at the Liverpool Athletic Grounds recently. The Russian has a very successful Continental record and is of Herculean strength. The Russian first obtained a good hold of Cannon, and brought him to his knees. Then ensued half-an-hour’s severe wrestling, with alternate successes, until at length a crisis arrived through the Russian, working with tremendous vigour, obtaining an arm hold, and forcing the limb to the hammerlock position, Cannon, unable to free himself, called out that he gave up the fall, but the Russian, ignorant of the English language, could not be stopped in time to avert some muscular injury to Cannon’s left arm. Under the circumstances Cannon felt bound to withdraw from the contest, which was declared by the referee to have resulted in favour of Hackenschmidt. Subsequently Cannon said it was the first time in the whole of his professional career that his arm had been forced up his back.
