(514 words) GREAT WRESTLING-MATCH FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP.―On Saturday last a match took place at the Snipe Inn, Audenshaw, between John Meadowcroft, of Radcliffe, and William Schora, of Ashton, to wrestle the best of three back falls, Lancashire fashion, catch as catch can, for the sum of £25 a side, the winner also to receive the gold champion’s cup (value sixty guineas), up to this match held by Schora. The match was an exciting affair, both men displaying great skill, Schora winning the first throw in seven minutes. In the second bout Meadowcroft won in twenty-three minutes. This, of course, brought the match even ; however, Schora in seven minutes more again threw his man, and won the match. 選手権を賭けた大レスリング試合。―先週の土曜にオーデンシャウの、鴫の宿にて、ラドクリフの、ジョン･メドウクロフトと、アシュトンの、ウィリアム･スコラとの間で、ランカシャー流、掴める様に掴め式、三本勝負をレスリングすべく、双方25ポンドずつの金を賭け、勝者はまた、この試合までスコラによって保持された、王者の金杯（六十ギニーの価値ある）を受け取るべく、試合が行われた。試合は血沸き肉踊るもので、両者が素晴らしい技能を示し、スコラが一本目を勝ち得たのは勝負時間七分であった。二本目はメドウクロフトが二十三分で勝利。これにより、もちろん、試合は五分五分になった。しかしながら、スコラが七分でもう一度相手を倒し、試合を勝ち取った。 土曜日の新聞に“On Saturday last”とあるので、試合はちょうど一週間前でしょう。 “back fall”、“throw”の意味 についてはこちらのページ「大正元年のドント･ムーブ」に書いています。 ﾒﾆｭｰﾍﾟｰｼﾞ「近代スポーツの故郷･英国のレスリング」へ戻る |
