In the primary stages of “Jujitsu” the pupil is taught to fall without reluctance the moment he feels his balance gone, and to take the shock of the fall on the many springy pads of muscle on the human body. Yukio Tani and Miyake, Mrs. Watts, and Miss Roberts demonstrated how it is possible to be thrown violently without being hurt; indeed they appeared rather to enjoy being brought down on the mat. グレインジャー氏がこの前の火曜の晩に主宰者となったのは最も興味深い日本式護身術、「柔術」の披露会、それは谷幸雄、三宅、そして他の専門家達、男女によって示され、所はウェストミンスターの、カクストン会堂、淑女紳士の大群衆の前に於いてであった。「柔術」は、敵を倒す方法としてのその価値はさておき、疑う余地なく素晴らしい運動である。「柔術」の第一段階に於いて学徒が教わるのは己の均衡が失われたと感じる瞬間に嫌気なく倒れる事、そして落下の衝撃を人体上多くの弾力ある筋肉の当て物の上に受ける事である。谷幸雄と三宅、ワッツ夫人、並びにロバーツ嬢が如何にして怪我なく激しく投げられ得るかを実演した。実際彼等はマット上に倒される事をむしろ楽しむかのように見えた。 Next came demonstrations of the throws most commonly used in “Jujitsu.” None of these require force, the secret being an intelligent use of the leverage offered by your antagonist’s arms, legs, and body. These throws were amply demonstrated, as also was one known as the “Yoko Basami,” or “the scissors,” by which it is a comparatively simple matter to bring an opponent to the ground without placing yourself within the reach of his arms. Of course it requires a lot of practice, but it really only consists in throwing yourself sideways on to the ground as your opponent rushes at you, and with a swift scissor-like movement of your legs entangling those of your adversary, whose own impetus brings about his downfall. Next we had a very full illustration of the arm, leg, and neck locks. There is an infinite variety of these, and once they are properly applied it is an anatomical impossibility apparently to escape from them. Some merely cause such immediate and intolerable pain that there is no need for the application of such force as would bring about dislocation or breakage, others only require the exertion of the smallest amount of strength to break a joint. Undoubtedly to policemen and others who have to handle men knowledge of “Jujitsu” would be an immense advantage. Apart from its value as a means of self-defence it seems to be rather good fun, for once you have mastered the art of falling there is very little danger indeed of receiving any bodily hurt from the ordinary throws.
