A wrestling match between Ryugoro Shima, a cleaver Japanese exponent of ju-itsu, and Kopsch, a prominent Adelaide wrestler, caused considerable excitement at the Tivoli Theatre on Thursday evening. Shima had offered £5 to any man whom he could not throw in 15 minutes and the challenge was accepted by Kopsch. Mr. H. A. Grainger acted as referee. From the first it was seen that the Adelaide man was in good form. The clever mariner in which he handled his wary opponent quickly won for him the sympathy of a large section of the audience. Kopsch also had an advantage of more than a stone in weight over the Japanese. Several times in the first 10 minutes he forced his opponent down on to the boards, the large audience showing their approval by loud applause. Within three minutes of time, however, Shima secured a fall by the “strangle” hold. Kopsch protested that this hold was not legitimate, but the referee ruled that though it was not usually allowed in English wrestling, in straight out ju-jitsu it was perfectly legitimate. The audience appeared dissatisfied with the verdict. Another local wrestler stepped on the stage and challenged the Japanese to wrestle, saying that he would bar no holds whatever. The contest will take place to-night.

　しまりゅうごろう、器用な日本人柔術専門家と、コプシュ、卓越したアデレードのレスラーとの間のレスリング試合が、少なからぬ興奮を引き起こしたのはチボリ劇場にて木曜の晩にであった。しまは己が15分の内に倒し得ぬ者に誰でも5ポンドをと提示するとその挑戦を受諾したのがコプシュであった。H･A･グレインジャー氏が行司を務めた。初めからアデレード人の調子がいい様に見えた。賢い船乗りはその油断のない敵を迅速に扱うに於いて観衆の大きな部分の共感を己が為に得た。コプシュはまた日本人より一ストーン以上重いという利を持っていた。初めの10分の内に幾度か彼はその敵を床板上に押し倒し、大観衆は騒々しい喝采によって彼等の賛意を示した。三分の時の内に、しかしながら、しまは「絞め」技によって一本を決めた。コプシュはこの技が正当でないと主張したが、行司の判定はそれが英国式レスリングに於いて通常は許されないけれど、妥協なき柔術に於いては完全に合法であるという事であった。観衆はその判断に不満のようだった。別の地元レスラーが舞台に上がり日本人にレスリングすべく挑戦し、曰く如何なる技も禁ぜざるべしと。その競技は今夜行なわれよう。



　 19世紀から20世紀初めにかけて、プロレスやボクシングの大きな試合におけるレフェリーは、職業的な専門家ではなく、名士が務めることがよくあったようです。試合の公正さを担保するためであろうと思います。賭け金保管人（ステイクホルダー）についても同様であったろうと思います。
