There was a very fair attendance. The entertainment commenced with a display of singlesticks by Japanese which was much appreciated by the audience. Lowery and Toomey boxed four very good rounds, and a shower of silver greeted them at the close. The ring was then cleared for the event of the evening, which was an eight-round boxing contest between Murphy, the novice, and “Jim” Graham, the well known footballer. Mr Harry Pearce was appointed referee, and in explaining the conditions to the audience, he said that if he found out the men were not on their merits he would stop the contest. 昨晩体育実技の番組が夏庭園にて催された。かなりの出席者がいた。興行は観衆に大いに評価された所の日本人達による竹刀剣術の公開を以って始まった。ロウリーとトーミーがとても素晴らしい四回戦をボクシングし、その終わりには銀貨の雨が彼等を出迎えた。リングがそれから空けられたのはその晩の催事、マーフィー、初心者と、「ジム」グラハム、有名な蹴球選手との間の、八回戦の拳闘競技のためであった。ハリー･パース氏が行司に任命され、観衆に条件を説明して曰く、もし彼等が評価に値しないと彼が知れば彼は競技を止めるであろうと。 In the first round Murphy commenced to force the pace, and Graham, boxing coolly, on one occasion nearly knocked the novice off his feet with a left hand hook under the eye. This aroused the fighting instincts of Murphy, and he sailed in and after a clinch forced Graham to the floor. While on his back Graham appealed for a foul, which the referee properly disallowed. During this time the ten seconds were being counted off, and Graham was asked to rise to his feet. When the appeal for a foul was given against him he said, “Well, I will not get up,” and remained on the floor until counted out. He had been given to understand when the match was made that Graham had a reputation, but he was satisfied now that Graham suffered more from a pain in the left side. He stated that he would give the loser’s end of the purse to the hospital. O’Toole then promised any two lads in the audience a purse of £5 to box five rounds, but as none could be found to accept the boxing part of the programme was completed. パット･オトールがそれからリングに歩み入って曰く競技が不十分に終わって申し訳ないと。彼は試合が組まれたときグラハムは評判がよいと聞かされていたが、グラハムが左脇腹の痛みより以上に苦しむ事に彼は今満足する。彼曰く彼は賞金の敗者の取り分を病院に寄付すると。オトールはそれから観衆中の任意の二人の若者に拳闘五回戦に対して5ポンドの賞金を約束したが、受諾する者を見い出し得ざるによって番組の拳闘の部は終わりとなった。 A most interesting match at catch-as-catch-can wrestling was then decided between George Leopold and Habu, a stronglybuilt Japanese. After an exciting contest Leopold won, each time beating the Jap with the strangle hold. At the conclusion of the entertainment Pat O’Toole handed the representative of the “Miner” the loser’s share of the Graham-Murphy purse, which will be given to the hospital. The promoter was much annoyed at Graham’s conduct. He has spent a large sum of money in fixing up the hall, and it was annoying to see the resolutions he had made to place a good class of boxing only before the public shattered by a man who showed that he had either a weak heart or was suffering from some other complaint which should not be allowed to exist in the constitution of legitimate boxing. それから掴める様に掴め式にて最も興味深い試合がジョージ･レオポルドとはぶ、頑強な体の日本人との間で決着された。興奮させられる競技の後レオポルドが勝利、毎回日本人を絞め技で打ち負かした。興行の結びにパット･オトールは「マイナー」紙の代表にグラハム対マーフィー戦の賞金の敗者の分け前を手渡した。それは病院に寄付されよう。興行主はグラハムの振舞いに大いに立腹していた。彼は会場の用意に多額の金を費やしており、心臓が弱いかもしくは正当な拳闘の構成に於いてはあり得べからざる他の何らかの不調を患っているかの男によって公衆の前に上級の拳闘を提供するという決意が粉々になったのを見るのが腹立たしかったのであった。 レスリングの記述が少しだけで残念です。それでも、日本人格闘家がプロの試合に出た記録としては古いもので、貴重だと思いご紹介しました。 レフェリーは広告に出ていた人から変わっています。豪州王者にもなったレスラーのハリー･パースは、後に谷幸雄に柔術を習います（別ページ「1887 キャッチ･フー･キャッチ･キャン（ランカシャー･スタイル）」に書いています）が、はぶが柔術家だったとすると、その関心はこの時に生まれたのかもしれません。 ﾒﾆｭｰﾍﾟｰｼﾞ「1900.6.13 はぶ 対 G･レオポルド」へ戻る |
