　Asheville, N. C., Sept. 8.―Charles Olson, who claims the wrestling championship of Illinois, has been matched to meet Professor A. Ono, instructor of jiu-jitsu at the United States naval academy. The men will meet in this city Sept. 15 in a mixed-style wrestling bout. The Jap will have the advantage of thirty-five pounds in weight over Olson, as he weighs 205 pounds to Olson’s 170 pounds.

　アッシュヴィル、北カロライナ州、9月8日。―イリノイ州レスリング選手権者を名乗る、チャールズ･オルソンが、取り組まされて立ち合うのは大野秋太郎師範、合衆国海軍兵学校の柔術教師である。両者はこの町にて9月15日に混合レスリング勝負で立ち合うであろう。日本人は体重に於いてオルソンより三十五ポンドの利があろう、彼の体重205ポンド（※約93kg）に対しオルソンが170（※約77kg）ポンドであるので。

　ASHEVILLE, N. C., Sept. 15.―Charles Olson of Peoria, Ills., tonight defeated Prof. O. Ono, instructor of jiu jitsu at Annapolis naval academy, in a mixed wrestling contest.
　There was only one bout, which lasted an hour, Ono giving up when Olson had strangled him for nearly ten minutes.
　By Ono’s stipulation Olson wore the jiu jitsu shirt and it was this which defeated the Japanese expert.

Olson, Wrestler, Strangled Prof. Ono Till Japanese Gave Up.

　ASHEVILLE, N. C., Sept. 15.―Charles Olson of Peoria, Ills., defeated Prof. A. Ono, Instructor of Jiu Jitsu at Annapolis Naval Academy, in a mixed wrestling contest to-night. There was only one bout, which lasted an hour, Ono giving up when Olson had strangled him for nearly ten minutes.

　見出し以外はほぼ同じですので、訳は省略します。ただ最後の一文のみ、“feature”の一語が加わっています。「大野の要求によりオルソンは柔術着を着ており、それがこの（試合の）特色でありこの特色がその日本の達人を負かした。」といった意味になりましょうか。
　“defeat”には「負かす」の他に「くつがえす」という意味もあります。「着用を求めた柔術着が逆に大野にとって仇となった」といったニュアンスも読み取り得ますでしょうか？
　この敗戦が海軍兵学校の仕事に影響したのか、それともそもそもそちらの仕事がなくなったのでプロ興行に出るようになったのか（ノース･カロライナ州にずっといたようでもあります）、わかりませんが、大野の在米期間はそれ程長くなかったようです。

　“Catch Wrestling”の著書、マーク･ヒューイットさんが、オルセンとその大野戦について書いています。
　英国で大野は「大仏」という名で知られる、とも書いています（一番下“EN2”）。
　上西貞一の「ラク」と言い、前田光世の「コマ」と言い、当時の日本人格闘家はちょっと変わったリング･ネームを付け（られ）ています。


　プロレス評論家の田鶴浜弘さんも愛読されたレスリング史書「ミロンからロンドスまで」（From Milo to Londos, by Nat Fleischer, 1936）に、オルソンがフランク･ゴッチと闘った際の記述（1906年3月）があります。

　…Finally at Asheville, North Carolina, the Iowa Farmer was matched to meet Charles Olson in a finish match. Olson had swept all before him and had a record of sixty-eight consecutive victories when he crawled through the ropes to meet Gotch on the evening of March 22.

　（前略）最後にアッシュヴィル、北カロライナ州にて、そのアイオワの農夫はチャールズ･オルソンとの完全決着戦を組まれた。オルソンは彼の前に立ち塞がる全ての者をなぎ倒し控え目に見ても六十八勝の記録を引っ下げてゴッチと立ち合うべくロープをくぐったのが3月22日の晩の事であった。

　Olson stripped in good shape, but weighed twenty pounds less than Gotch and stood almost three inches taller. He looked frail when he stood up to shake hands with the former champion. One of the biggest crowds that ever packed into the Grand Opera House gave both men a hearty cheer when they were introduced.

　オルソンはよく体が絞れていたが、体重は二十ポンドゴッチより軽く身長はほぼ三インチ高かった。立ち上がって前王者と握手する時彼はか弱く見えた。両者が導き入れられた時大歌劇場にかつてなく詰め込まれた大群衆中の一人が彼等に心からの激励を与えた。

　The match proved one of the fastest in the annals of the ancient sport. Olson was exceptionally fast on his feet and easily evaded the bull-like rushes of Gotch when time was called. His previous winning tactics had been to stand his man on his head and whirl him about until he had him dizzy, then to crash him to the canvas and jump in with an arm and body lock.

　試合はその古来の競技の記録に於いて最も早いものの一つとなった。オルソンは例外的にしっかりしていて開始の時が告げられるやゴッチの雄牛の如き突進を容易に避けた。彼の以前の必勝戦法は相手を頭で立たせて彼をめまいがするまでぐるぐる回し、それから彼をキャンバスに叩き付け飛び付いて腕と胴を固めるというものであった。

　But it was no easy matter to upset Gotch, much less to stand him on his head. Olson tried his favorite stunt after the two had wrestled head to head for ten minutes, but Gotch’s underpinning stayed “put,” and instead Olson was sent crashing to the mat. Gotch quickly worked his way behind and applied his toe hold. Olson endured the pain for a couple of minutes and then signalled to the referee that he would allow a fall.

　しかしゴッチを引っくり返す、ましてや彼を頭で立たせるのは容易な事ではなかった。両者が頭と頭を突き合わせて十分間レスリングした後にオルソンは彼お得意の離れ業を試みたものの、ゴッチの下支えは動かずに「じっと」して、代わりにオルソンがマットに激突させられた。ゴッチは素早く何とか後ろを取って彼の爪先固めを用いた。オルソンはその痛みに数分間耐えそれから行司に彼が一本を許す旨合図をした。

　The second fall came even faster, as Gotch was a whirlwind, and followed Olson until he flopped him to the canvas. It took only a few seconds to lock the foot and start squeezing the big toe. Olson sagged over on his back and the referee slapped Gotch on the shoulder.

　二本目が一層早くなったのは、ゴッチが旋風の如き目まぐるしさで、オルソンをキャンバスに倒すまで追い掛けたが故であった。その足を固めて大きな爪先を絞り上げ始めるまで数秒しか掛からなかった。オルソンはぐったりして仰向けになりそして行司がゴッチの肩を叩いた。
