WATERTOWN, N. Y., Aug. 19.―In an open arena and before a big crowd of fighting enthusiasts to-day Con O’Kelly of Syracuse, a protege of Tommy Ryan, and who has been spoken of as one of Jim Corbett’s finds, who will try to develop him into a fit opponent for Jack Johnson, and Billy Edwards, the colored fighter of Pittsburg, were to have fought ten rounds, but at the finish of eighth round Referee Tom Conley of Syracuse declared O’Kelly the winner. In the seventh and eighth rounds Edwards acted entirely on the defensive and was quite done for when verdict was announced. At no time during the fight was Edwards dangerous.

　Under the heading, “A Prospective Heavy-weight Champion,” a recent New York file has the following:―”At the Public Arena ‘Con’ O’Kelly, of Syracuse, a protege of ‘Tommy’ Ryan, and who has been spoken of as one of ‘Jim’ Corbett’s finds, who will try to develop him into a fit opponent for ‘Jack’ Johnson, and ‘Billy’ Edwards, the coloured boxer of Pittsburg, were to have fought ten rounds, but at the finish of the eighth round Referee ‘Tom’ Sonley, of Syracuse, declared O’Kelly the winner. 　A world’s champion probability is O’Kelly, a native of the Emerald Isle, where he was born twenty-four years ago. He is 6ft 2in in height, and weighs 16st 7lb in boxing condition, and built in proportion, as the following measurements show: Reach 78in, neck 21 3/4in, chest (normal) 50in (expanded) 52 1/2in, waist 32 1/2in, calf 16 1/2in, thigh 26in, ankle 10in, biceps 17 1/4in, forearm 15 1/4in, wrist 9in. He is 8 years younger than the present champion, three-quarters of an inch taller, more than a stone and a-half heavier, 4 inches longer in the reach, nearly 5 inches bigger round the neck, 5 inches round the chest, only half an inch round the waist, nearly 3 inches bigger biceps, and Johnson’s are exceptionally large, 2 1/4 inches in the forearm, and his wrist measures 1 1/2 inch more than Johnson’s. Backed up by these natural advantages, he has a good head, and is ambitious.

　H. D. Mackintosh, the well-known Australian fight promoter, thinks that in the Englishman, Bombardier Wells, he has found a man who will lower Johnson’s colours. Tommy Ryan, the ex-champion, says that he has found a man, C. G. O’Kelly, a gigantic Irishman, who won the heavy-weight wrestling championship of England, who will, with training, defeat Johnson, and Jim Corbett is looking for a big man for the same task, so Mr Johnson is apparently in for a lively time.

　UTICA, N. Y., Oct. 31.―Con O’Kelly, who has aspirations to meet Jack Johnson, was outgeneraled by Hank Griffin of California tonight in a ten-round go. Griffin knocked O’Kelly down in the third round and opened a deep gash over his right eye a moment later with a savage jab. Griffin proved the better fighter, but O’Kelly’s extra weight enabled him to stay until the finish.

　According to the Sydney “Referee’s” American commissioner, the search for a white heavy-weight capable of lowering the colours of “Jack” Johnson is exciting as much interest as ever in the States. Americans, in all seriousness, do some very amusing things, but they have perpetrated nothing quite so funny as this for many a long day. A few years ago, when white men, such as Corbett, Fitzsimmons, and Jeffries, were at the top of the tree, the utter novices, which are, in all seriousness, brought forward as opponents of Johnson, would have been considered subjects for mental treatment. Nowadays, any healthy specimen of white over six feet high, and somewhere in the neighbourhood of 14st., can rely on at least a few days’ notoriety in the States, if he can secure some well-known ring-follower to say a few kind words for him as the hope of the white race.

　First of all there was put forward one Warren Barbour, a champion amateur. Then Jim Corbett unearthed a wonderful fighter who was to appear as the “Masked Unknown,” or some such personage. Then “Tommy” Burns, when he found himself unable to stand training on account of an injured knee, brought forward a protege in “Jack” Lester, who has yet to meet a boxer of merit. “Tommy” Ryan, the one-time middle-weight wonder, seized on “Con” O’Kelly, a gigantic Irish policeman, who won the heavy-weight wrestling championship, at the Olympia Games of London in 1908. O’Kelly’s pretensions were quickly settled by a coloured person in the shape of Hank Griffin. And so the search goes on.

　SYRACUSE, N. Y., Nov. 28.―Hank Griffin, a giant negro from the west, had his shoulder dislocated in the second round of a battle with Con O’Kelly here tonight. The injury came in a hard clinch on the ropes. Griffin concealed his injury from his seconds and continued in evident distress. Early in the fourth round, however, while O’Kelly was knocking Griffin about the ring, the negro’s seconds threw up the sponge.

Flynn’s superior ring generalship and greater experience proved too much for Tommy Ryan’s protege. O’Kelly’s left eye was in bad shape in the tenth round.

　Just before sailing for England in company with Sam Langford and party, Porky Dan Flynn had two encounters that make him look like a warhorse at least. In Philadelphia, before the members of Jack O’Brien’s palatial new club, the American A.C., Flynn, and Al Kublak boxed an even draw of six rounds. Then, travelling over 400 miles to Syracuse, he took on Con O’Kelly, Tommy Ryan’s big “hope,” in a 10-round affair. The bout took place at the Armoury, and 3000 spectators witnessed it. Flynn showed plenty of science, which O’Kelly lacked, but O’Kelly had the brawn. The Boston man cleverly side-stepped O’Kelly’s onslaughts all through the mill, and when the bout ended he had O’Kelly besmeared with gore and one eye closed. Flynn’s science was amazing to the big fellow, and he well won.
