Four falls were scored by the Columbia wrestling team yesterday afternoon in the meet with Lafayette grapplers in the Columbia gymnasium. The Blue and White aggregation carried off the honors with final score of 27 to 5, losing only one bout to its opponents. The Pennsylvania team made a hard fight, however, in every bout, and the decisions rendered were close.

Both were well matched physically, but the superior skill of Pendleton counted in his favor. With an arm-and-neck hold on Becker it was just a question of time before a fall was secured, as Becker could not shake off Pendleton’s vice-like grip.

When Helped Back Mehnert Disqualifies Pendleton, Who Also Goes Out.
助けられて戻った時メナートが失格としたペンドルトン、彼もまた外に出る。

　More than half the contests in the preliminary rounds of the Metropolitan Association A. A. U. wrestling championships, decided at the Bronx Church House last night, resulted in falls. The sport was never equaled in a Metropolitan title tournament.

　運動愛好家連合レスリング選手権のニューヨーク都市圏協会予選に於ける競技の半ば以上が、ブロンクス教会堂にて昨夜決せられ、一本勝ちに終わった。その競技は今まで都市圏選手権大会に等しくなかった。

　Nat Pendleton of the New York A. C. and Columbia University, intercollegiate and metropolitan champion at 175 pounds, lost his title when beaten by Frans Malmberg of the Norwegian-American A. C. on a disqualification. If this exhibition had been prearranged it could not have been more mirth provoking, for it would up with Referee George Mehnert of Newark taking a flight through the air and being saved from possible injury in a drop to the floor by Announcer Bill Rossbach of the St. Bartholomew A. C.

　Pendleton in some manner was thrown from the ring to the press table after a minute of wrestling, and before climbing back to the mat he endeavored to regain a hold on Malmberg, which he had a right to do, according to many of the spectators. He was dragged back into the ring by the Norwegian grappler, and another mix-up followed, in which the referee became involved. Mehnert is little more than a bantamweight, and he was tossed about like a feather by heavy athletes. The result was that when he was unable to extricate himself from the merry tussle and was hurled over the ropes. He had a very narrow escape from injury, and when he was picked up and assisted to his position he was somewhat flustered, and immediately declared the bout forfeited by Pendleton. The Columbia man undoubtedly would have been the winner, for he had everything his own way until the disqualification.

　ロープを張ったリングをアマチュアでも使うことがあったようです。
　リングから選手が出た場合、リング中央でその直前の体勢に戻って試合を再開するという、「ストップ･ドント･ムーブ」に似た規定が当時のレスリングにあったことは別ページ「大正元年のドント･ムーブ」に書いています。

Pendleton Wins 175-Pound Title in Wrestling Tourney.

　NEWARK, N. J., May 6.―Eight new champions were crowned here tonight in the national amateur wrestling championship of America at the National Turn Hall in Bruce Street. The first wrestler to win a national title was Nathaniel G. Pendleton of Columbia University, who represented the New York Athletic Club in the 175-pound class.

　ニューアーク、ニュー･ジャージー州、5月9日。…八人の新王者が此の地で今宵戴冠したのはブルース通りの国立曲がり角会堂での全米アマチュア･レスリング選手権に於いてであった。全米選手権を勝ち得た最初のレスラーはコロンビア大学のナサニエル･Ｇ･ペンドルトン、175ポンド級に於けるニューヨーク運動倶楽部の代表であった。

　Pendleton was the intercollegiate 175-pond champion in 1914 and 1915. He far outclassed his opponent, Alexander Hedlund, of the Finnish Gymnasium of Quincy, Mass., and won the referee’s decision in fifteen minutes. The summaries in part:
