Tom Cannon, the famous wrestler and recognised champion of England and France, arrived in New York a few weeks ago for the purpose of adding to his title that of champion of America, and expects to arrange matches with Evan Lewis, the Strangler, champion of Wisconsin, Tom Jenkins, champion of Cleveland, and Charles Wittmer, champion of Cincinnatti. It was Cannon who first discovered Yousouf, the Terrible Turk, and brought him to America.

　トム･キャノン、高名なるレスラーにして英国並びに仏国の認定王者が、ニューヨークに数週前到着したのは彼の称号に米国王者を加える為であり、取り決めるつもりなのはイワン･ルイス、絞め殺し屋、ウィスコンシンの王者、トム･ジェンキンズ、クリーブランドの王者、そしてチャールズ･ウィットマー、シンシナティの王者との試合である。恐怖のトルコ人、ユーソフを最初に見出して、彼を米国に連れて来たのはキャノンであった。

　He taught the Turk all he knew about scientific wrestling, and much of Yousouf’s success could be directly attributed to the experience he acquired while under Cannon’s mentorship. The latter was the one man in the world whom Yousouf refused to meet in a match, and Cannon’s remarkable ability as a wrestler will be conceded when we recall the splendid victories achieved by the Turk during his sojourn in America.

　Cannon’s intention is to meet Tom Jenkins, of Cleveland in his first match. He dignifies the latter by alluding to him as the best wrestler in America, evidently gauging his opinion by the form displayed by Jenkins when he wrestled Yousouf. As an indication of the cincerity（※sincerityか） of his intentions Cannon deposited $250 for a forfeit in any match he might make. He evinces a preference for Jenkins and will make an effort to arrange a match with him if the latter is agreeable. Cannon is no stranger in America. It was in 1886 that he made a tour of that country and Australia.

　キャノンの意図は、彼の初戦に於いてクリーブランドの、トム･ジェンキンズと立ち合う事にある。彼は後者を米国に於ける最高のレスラーと言って持ち上げており、どうやらユーソフとレスリングした時にジェンキンズによって示されたやり方によってその評価を見定めたらしい。彼の意図の真実さの印としてキャノンは彼が行うべき任意の試合に供託する為250ドルを差し入れた。彼はジェンキンズ戦の優先を示してもし後者が乗り気になるなら彼との試合を取り決めるべく努力するであろう。キャノンは米国に不案内ではない。彼がその国と豪州を旅したのは1886年に於いてであった。

　Among the men defeated in America that year was Evan Lewis, the Strangler, gaining two falls and the match in the unprecedented short time of six minutes. He next defeated Peitro Delmos, champion of France, for $1,000 at Woodward Gardens, San Francisco, also Matsada Sorakichi, the famous Jap, and many others. If a match between Cannon and Jenkins is made it will take place in Cleveland some time this month.

　その年米国に於いて負かされた男達の中にはイワン･ルイス、絞め殺し屋がおり、二本を取って六分という前例のない短時間の試合であった。彼が次に負かしたのはピエトロ･デルマ、フランス王者を、1,000ドルを賭けてサンフランシスコの、ウッドワード公園にて、また松田そらきち、高名なる日本人、そして他の大勢であった。もしキャノンとジェンキンズとの間の試合が組まれるならばそれはクリーブランドに於いて今月の何時かに行われるであろう。



　キャノンと闘ったフランス王者は、他の新聞を読むと“Pietro Delmas”が正しい綴りのようです。
　キャノンは元々トルコ人でもカラ･アーメットに付いていたはずで、「ユーソフを最初に見出した」は言い過ぎの気もしますが、どうやったのかユーソフに乗り換えたのが成功だったようです。
　ユーソフを連れて再渡米を果たしたこのベテランが、そのトレーナー、マネージャー役に納まることなく、自身が第一線で闘うべくやる気満々だった所が感じられる記事です。
