Cleveland, May 5.―Yousouf, the Turk, defeated Tom Jenkins, Thursday night in two straight falls at catch-as-catch-can. The match took place at Central Armory before a great crowd. The contest was remarkable as both men displayed enormous strength, skill and ferocity. Jenkins, although weighing only 181 pounds to the Turk’s 240, was a big favorite in the betting. The two men jumped at each other like tigers at the outset and a few minutes after went over the ropes in a heap, Jenkins on top. They struggled for one hour and one minutes when Yousouf won the fall on a half Nelson.

　クリーブランド、5月5日。…ユーソフ、トルコ人が、トム･ジェンキンズを、木曜の晩掴める様に掴め式にて二本連取して負かした。試合は中央練兵棟にて大群衆の前で行なわれた。競技が注目すべきものだったのは両者が巨大な力、技能と獰猛さを示したからであった。ジェンキンズは、体重はトルコ人の240に対して181ポンドに過ぎなかったけれど、賭けに於いては大本命であった。二人の男は初め互いに虎の様に飛び掛かりそして数分後綱を越えて積み重なって落ち、ジェンキンズが上になった。彼等が一時間一分闘った時ユーソフがハーフ･ネルソンで一本を勝ち得た。

　The Turk went at Jenkins like a cyclone in the second bout. He spun him on his head and then grabbed him by the legs and hurled him to the edge of the mat, where he got both shoulders down.

　トルコ人は二本目暴風の様にジェンキンズに襲い掛かった。彼は相手をその頭を下に着けて回しそれから彼の両脚を掴んで彼をマットの端まで放り投げ、そこで彼は両肩を下に着いた。

　Brady, Gus Hill and others jumped in the ring while thousands yelled ‘foul.’ Amid great noise Referee L. D. Eldridge of Rochester declared that Yousouf had won the fall.

　ブラディ、ガス･ヒルと他の者達がリングに飛び入った時数千人が「反則」を叫んでいた。大騒音の只中で行司ロチェスターのL･D･エルドリッジが宣したのはユーソフが一本を勝ち得た事であった。

　It took about the minutes. Although Eldridge’s decision in this fall was questionable, there is no question but that Jenkins was out-mat held. The Turk showed expert familiarity with all the holds known to wrestlers, and, in the opinion of all Clevelanders who witnessed the contest, is really the champion as proclaimed in the East. He did not look as though he had trained any.

　それには数分間程掛かった。この一本に於けるエルドリッジの判定は疑わしかったけれど、ジェンキンズがマットの外側で押さえられた事には疑いはない。トルコ人はレスラー達に知られるあらゆる技に関する専門知識を示し、そして、競技を観戦した全てのクリーブランド人達の考えによれば、東洋に於いて宣せられた様に真に王者である。彼は少しも鍛えた様には見えなかった。



　ウィリアム･ブラディはユーソフの、ガス･ヒルはジェンキンズのマネージャーです。事前の発表では、5月4日にグレコ･ローマンとキャッチ･アズ･キャッチ･キャン両スタイルのミックスド･マッチの予定でしたが、変更があったようです。のちにジェンキンズは世界三強の一人と言われますが、残る二人のライバルの内、フランク･ゴッチは当時まだデビュー前、ジョージ･ハッケンシュミットはまだロシアにいました。
