Charley Wittmer Stood Off the Terrible Turk.

Foreigner Said He Was Too Sick to Give the Exhibition but the People Insisted.

　Cincinnati, June 4.―Three thousand people saw the wrestling match at the Walnut Street Theater tonight between Yousouf, the Turk, and Charles Wittmer of Cincinnati, champion of America. On arrival at the theater Yousouf retired to a dressing room and declared he would not go on. He complained of malaria and exhibited a physician’s certificate which stated that his temperature was 103 and that he was too ill to wrestle. His manager Billy Brady and others labored with him an hour but he remained obstinate. Meantime Wittmer had been on the mattress an hour or more, and the crowd was hooting and howling.

　シンシナティ、6月4日。…三千人が見たレスリング試合は胡桃通り劇場にて今宵ユーソフ、トルコ人と、シンシナティのチャールズ･ウィットマー、米国王者との間で行われた。劇場に到着するやユーソフは支度部屋に引っ込んで彼は出場するつもりがないと宣言した。彼はマラリアを訴えて彼の体温が103度（※華氏。摂氏39.4度）あり彼がレスリングするには病が重過ぎると述べた内科医の診断書を提示した。彼のマネージャーのビリー･ブラディや他の者達が彼を相手に一時間努力したものの彼は強情に居残った。その間ウィットマーはマットレス上に一時間以上あって、群集は野次ったりわめいたりしていた。

　When Brady announced that Yousouf was sick he was howled down. The audience was in a rage and Yousouf was told that he would be mobbed and killed if he did not appear. This induced the Turk to go on. Len Lanius, a local light-weight, was agreed on for referee. He announced the match as best two bouts in three. Greco-Roman, no holds barred and flying falls to count. Yousouf had a slight advantage in weight. They began to wrestle at 9:30 and for one solid hour the first bout progressed, Yousouf failing every time in a dozen or more desperate efforts to get a Nelson hold. Wittmer made as many vain attempts at the neck hold.

　ブラディがユーソフは病気だと発表した時彼は怒鳴られて黙らせられた。観衆は激高しておりユーソフは彼がもし出なければ彼はもみくちゃにされて殺されようと言われた。これがユーソフを出場する気にさせた。レン･ラニアス、地元の軽量級が、行司として同意された。彼は試合が二本先取の三本勝負であると告げた。ギリシャ･ローマ式、禁じられる掴みはなく投げ一本が数えられた。ユーソフは体重に於いて僅かに利があった。彼等が9：30にレスリングを始めて丸々一時間一本目の勝負が進行し、ユーソフはネルソン･ホールドを掛ける為の十二回かそれ以上の死に物狂いの骨折りに於いて毎回しくじった。ウィットマーは首固めに於いて無駄な企てを同じ回数だけなした。

　Yousouf was the aggressor, but neglected opening after opening which Wittmer gave him. At 11 o’clock, after struggling an hour and a half, the first bout was still in progress with both men showing evidence of weariness and chances regarded as even.

　ユーソフは攻撃者であったが、ウィットマーが彼に与えた機会という機会を見過ごした。11時、一時間半の闘いの後に、一本目の勝負は両者が疲労の跡と互角とみなされる勝ち目を示しつつなおも進行中であった。

　At midnight the police interfered and stopped the contest.

　真夜中に警察が干渉して競技を止めた。

　At that time the first bout had been in progress two and a half hours with no signs of either man gaining the mastery. The referee declared it a draw. The unanimous verdict was that the Turk had finally met his match.

　その時に一本目の勝負は何れの者も勝利を得る兆しのないまま二時間半進行中であった。行司はその引き分けを宣した。満場一致の意見はトルコ人がついに彼の好敵手に出会ったという事であった。



　ウィットマーはグレコ･ローマンの専門家で、ウィリアム･マルドゥーンに禅譲されて王者となったとされるローバーより高く評価されることもあったようです。
