At Tattersall’s in Chicago tonight, the best heavyweight wrestlers in the world will meet for the championship and a purse of $2,500 offered by George Considine of Detroit. One is Yousouf, the “Terrible Turk,” who has never been thrown, and the other, Evan Lewis, who, after years of wrestling, has come to be the recognized champion of the sport in this country.

　The style is catch-as-catch-can. No holds are barred. This provision allows the use of the “strangle hold.” It allows the hammer lock, the half-Nelson, the full-Nelson―in fact, any and all holds obtainable with arms, shoulders and legs. It is to be a battle of strength and science.

　形式は掴める様に掴め式。禁じ手なし。この規定は「絞め技」の使用を許す。それが許すのはハンマーロック、ハーフ･ネルソン、フル･ネルソン…事実上、腕、肩及び脚を以って得られる任意かつ全ての技。それは力と科学の闘いとなるはずである。

　Although as yet Yousouf has never shown any science, it is claimed by those who are close to him that Lewis can teach him nothing.

　The bout will be started at 8 o’clock and the mat will be surrounded by ropes like a prize ring. This is to prevent either man from being pushed off the platform. Both men are strong, clever and in deadly earnest. Each knows what defeat means to him.

　勝負は8時に始められそしてマットは賞金拳闘のリングの様に複数の綱で囲まれよう。これは何れの男も演壇から突き落とされる事を防ぐ為である。両者とも力強く、巧みにして全く真剣である。敗北が己に意味する所を各々が知っている。

　Chicago, June 20.―The Lewis-Yousouf wrestling match at Tattersall’s tonight was witnessed by 10,000 people. It was for a purse of $2,500 and the championship of the world, best two in three, catch-as-catch-can, no holds barred except the throttling, two points down. Tim Hogan, of Chicago, was referee.

　When the men entered the ring at 9 o’clock, Yousof at once assumed the aggressive. After a struggle of three minutes, Lewis being on the pad stomach down, the referee separated the men and gave the match to Lewis, because Yousouf, as the referee said, was strangling him. There was much howling and yelling from the disappointed crowd.

　男達がリングに9時に入った際、ユーソフが直ちに攻撃を仕掛けた。三分の闘いの後、ルイスが腹這いに倒れ、行司が男達を分けて戦勝をルイスに与えたのは、ユーソフが、行司の言ったように、彼を絞めたからであった。失望した群集から大いにわめき騒ぐ声が上がった。

　George Considine, the backer of Lewis, announced that he did not think the hold was a strangle. Brady and all of Yousouf’s men, Lewis and his seconds, and Promoter Considine alternated in trying to get a hearing.

　ジョージ･コンシダイン、ルイスの後援者が、自分はその掴みが絞め技だと考えないと発表した。ブラディとユーソフ方の全員、ルイスと彼の介添人達、そして興行主のコンシダインが代わる代わる言い分を聞いてもらうべく試みた。

　Lewis agreed to take the winner’s end of the purse, $2,250, and continue the match with C. O. Duplessie as referee, but Referee Hogan refused to allow it, and was finally escorted from the ring by the police. During all that time there was the wildest excitement.

　The men met on the mat again for exhibition at 10:10 and within four minutes Yousouf secured the same hold that brought forth the first decision. Duplessis tapped him on the back but he quite reluctantly. The fall was awarded to Lewis on the foul.

　男達がマット上で再び模範試合の為に立ち合ったのは10：10で四分の内にユーソフが決めたその同じ技が最初の判定を引き出した。デュプレッシーが彼の背中を叩いたが彼は全くしぶしぶであった。一本が反則によりルイスに与えられた。

　At the end of 15 minutes interval, provided for in the articles, the match was resumed. Yousouf secured a strangle hold and Lewis gave up in six and one-half minutes. After another 15 minutes the bout was continued. When Lewis had broken several locks and wriggled out from a spin on his head, the Turk again obtained a strangle hold and Lewis gave up in seven minutes and ten seconds, Yousouf winning the match clearly surpassing the Strangler at his own game.

　契約条項に定められた、十五分の幕あいの終了時に、試合が再開された。ユーソフが絞め技を決めてルイスが参ったしたのが六分半の内であった。もう一度の15分の後で勝負が続けられた。ルイスが幾つかの固め技を破りそして頭を下に付けてのとんぼ返りを以って何とかうまく逃れ出た時、トルコ人が再び絞め技を得てルイスが七分十秒に降参、ユーソフは試合に勝利してその絞め殺し屋を彼自身の土俵に於いてはっきり上回ったのであった。

　Lewis said after the bout: “I was licked. The Turk is a better man.”

　ルイスは勝負の後で言った。「俺は打ち負かされた。トルコ人がうわてだ。」

　A resolution was presented in the city council tonight, directing the chief of police to stop the match, inspired, it is supposed, by the neglect of the management to send the aldermen complimentary tickets. Amid considerable laughter, the resolution was adopted and an alderman sent out to secure its enforcement. He returned with the news that every member of the council had been invited to attend the exhibition free of charge.

　今夜市議会に於いて提出された決議案は、警察署長に試合を止める様指示するもので、推測するに、市議会議員達に招待券を送るべき支配人の怠慢に、端を発する。少なからぬ笑い声の中、決議案は採択されてある市議会議員がその執行を請け負うべく派遣された。彼は議会の全員がその模範試合に無料で出席すべく招待されたという知らせを持ち帰った。



　最初のレフェリー、ホーガンはユーソフの絞め技を見て、三本勝負の一本目、ではなく試合そのものを、ルイスの反則勝ちとして終わらせました。これはユーソフ対ローバー第一戦と同じ結末であり、同様に観客の暴動を心配したためか、興行主のコンシダインは試合続行を希望しました。勝者とされたルイスがこれに同意したのは、興行主が彼の後援者でもあったからでしょうか。しかしこれを実現するためには、拒否を続けるホーガンを警察が強制排除しなければなりませんでした。20世紀初頭ぐらいまでの米国では、プロレスでもボクシングでも、大きな試合のレフェリーは職業的な専門家ではなく、地元の名士から選ぶことが多かったようです。これは試合の公正性を訴えるためと思われます。レフェリーの権威は重く、興行主であってもその判定を覆すことは難しかったようです。コンシダイン自身も、ユーソフ対ピーターソン戦でレフェリーを務めています。
　レフェリーを代えて改めて三本勝負が始まりますが、そこで性懲りもなくまた絞め技を使うのがユーソフらしいところでしょうか。このときの反則負けはあくまでも三本勝負の一本目のものです。二本目、三本目においてルイスをギブ･アップさせたユーソフが再試合を勝利しましたが、決め技はいずれも「ストラングル･ホールド」。なぜこれが反則にならなかったのかは、別の新聞記事を読まないとわかりません。

　CHICAGO, June 20.―There came near being a riot at Tattersalls to-night, when Referee Tim Hogan gave the wrestling match between Yousouf, the “Terrible Turk,” and Evan Lewis, the “Strangler,” to the latter after two minutes’ work. Pinkerton’s men invaded the ring to remove the referee, when Inspector Hartnett and Captain of Detectives Colleran climbed through the ropes and drove them out. Ten thousand men howled, hissed and jeered. Referee Hogan, Billy Brady, George Considine, who gave the $2,500 purse ; F. H. Gill, Lewis’s backer, and others howled themselves speechless in trying to explain matters. The referee was yelling: “Lewis wins this match. I order him out of the ring.” Inspector Hartnett called up a few of his men and threw Referee Tim Hogan out of the ring.

　Brady then announced that he would agree to any man in the house as referee. There were cries for George Siler and Malachi Hogan. After half an hour’s wrangling Charles O. Duplessis was agreed upon to referee the second match, which was in reality an exhibition. The first match was short, the Turk getting the strangle hold in thirty seconds. To the amazement of everybody Lewis broke this, only to go to the mat with Yousouf on top of him. The Sultan’s subject again got the strangle hold, his arm slipping until his left hand pressed hard against the windpipe of Lewis. It was then that Hogan gave the match to Lewis.

　The second match, which was won by Yousouf, was as uproarious as the first. There was the same wrangling among the seconds and yells from the crowd. The first fall went to Lewis in four minutes on a foul, the Turk using the strangle hold. Yousouf won the next in six minutes by a strangle hold across the face, Lewis giving up. The third fall went the same way and in the same time.
　
　第二試合は、ユーソフが勝利、第一試合同様に騒がしかった。介添人間の同じ口論と群集よりの叫び声があった。一本目はトルコ人が絞め技を用いて、四分でルイスに反則勝ちが与えられた。ユーソフが二本目を六分で勝ち得たのは顔への締め技によってで、ルイスが参ったした。三本目も同じ方法で同じ時間に決まった。

　コナン･ドイル作のホームズ物の長編「恐怖の谷」でおなじみ。警察に協力して会場の警備を請け負っていたようです。
　再試合を「模範試合」“an exhibition match”と言う意味は、初戦で賞金の配分が決定していたためその結果で金が動かない＝プライズ･マッチでない（と記者が思っていた）所にあるのではないかと思います。市議会に対しては初めから“an exhibition”と言っていたようですが、違法なプライズ･ファイトではないと強調したい意図からかもしれません。

　CHICAGO, June 24.―At a meeting that lasted until 6 o’clock yesterday morning the representatives of Yousouf, the “Terrible Turk,” and Evan Lewis reached an agreement that was satisfactory to both sides. The remarkable decision by Referee Tim Hogan was freely discussed, and after a wordy battle it was agreed that the purse be divided equally.

　シカゴ、6月24日。…昨朝6時まで続いた会合にて、「恐怖のトルコ人」、ユーソフの代理人と、イワン･ルイスは双方が満足すべき合意に至った。行司ティム･ホーガンの注目すべき判定が自由に論議され、舌戦の末に懸賞金を等しく分割する事が同意された。

　The Turk left today for Toronto, Ont., where he has an engagement to wrestle Saturday night. The show was a financial success. Billy Brady left for the East yesterday and George Considine, manager of the show, left today.

　トルコ人は今日、オンタリオ州、トロントへ向けて出発、その地で彼は土曜の晩にレスリングする契約がある。興行は金銭的に成功であった。ビリー･ブラディは昨日東部へ去りジョージ･コンシダイン、興行の管理者は、今日発った。



　勝者分の賞金を得る、という条件で再試合に応じたはずのルイスでしたが、そこでの完敗を認めて、賞金をニ等分することで合意したようです。初戦と再戦で一勝一敗、という計算でしょうか。

　コンシダインの死亡記事です。ホテル経営を本業とするお金持ちだった由。享年44歳だと、1898年にはかなり若かったことになります。コーベットのマネージャーもしたそうですが、1900年のコーベット対ジェフリーズ戦の頃で、その時ブラディはジェフリーズのマネージャーになっていました。
