Wrestling, dog-fighting, and cock-fighting are not uncommon ; but they are more peculiar to the hardier population outside the towns. Now and then, a rough "up-and-down" fight takes place, at an ale-house door, or brought off, more systematically, in a nook of the fields. In 1801 they had increased, by a more satisfactory enumeration, to 17,416; in 1811, to 24,119; in 1821, to 31,295; in 1831, to 41,195, making the almost incredible increase within the last sixty years, of eightfold. 1791年、既存の当局によって町の人口調査が行なわれた時、公になったのは、住民数が大ボルトンに9000人、そして小ボルトンに2000人、合わせて11,000人に達した事であったが、これ等の概数は余り信頼されるべきものではない。1801年にはそれは、より立派な計測によって、17,416人に増加し、1811年には、24,119人に、1821年には、31,295人に、1831年には41,195人に達し、ほぼ八倍という、驚くべき増加をここ六十年の内になしている。 The manners of the labouring class of the people in this place are frank and primitive; but there is amongst them a mode of settling their quarrels by single combat that cannot be too strongly condemned. At almost every assize at Lancaster several individuals are tried for murder or manslaughter, arising out of battles, when, to the astonishment of strangers, evidence is given of parties mutually agreeing to fight “ up and down,” which includes the right of kicking, (or purring, as it is called in Bolton) on every part of the body, in all possible situations, and of squeezing the throat, or “ throttling,” to the very verge of death. この地の労働者階級の人々の振る舞いはざっくばらんで素朴である。しかし彼等の間には余り強くは非難され得ない唯一つの格闘によって彼等の口論を解決する方法がある。ランカスターでのほぼ全ての巡回裁判に於いて幾人かの個人が審理される謀殺ないし故殺は、決闘から生じ、時に、余所者をひどく驚かせる事に、当事者達が「上下」の闘いに相互に同意した証拠が示される。それは体の如何なる部分も、あらゆる可能な状態に於いて、蹴る権利（或いはパーリング、ボルトンに於いて呼ばれる様に）、そして喉を絞り上げる、或いは死の瀬戸際まで、「窒息させる」権利を含む。 At races, fairs, and on other public occasions, contests of this nature are witnessed by crowds of persons, who take part on each side, with as much interest as is excited by the regular boxing matches of the south. That death often occurs in such matches will not be thought extraordinary, especially when it is considered that clogs, or heavy wooden-soled shoes, covered with iron plates, and studded with large nails, are commonly worn in the districts where this barbarous custom prevails. To check these revolting contests, several of the judges, about thirty years ago, revived the almost obsolete punishment of burning in the hand, upon conviction of manslaughter arising from kicking. 競馬、定期市、そして他の公共行事に於いて、この種の競技を観戦する群衆は、南部の正規のボクシング試合に興奮するのと同様に大いなる興味を持って、双方に肩入れする。斯様な試合に於いてしばしば生じる死は異常に思われぬであろう、木靴や、鉄板で覆われ、そして大きな釘を打った、重い木製の底の靴が、この野蛮な風習の普及しているその地方に於いて一般に履かれていると考えられる時には特に。これ等の不快な競技を阻止する為に、幾人かの裁判官達は、およそ三十年前に、蹴りから生じた故殺の有罪判決に、ほとんど廃れていた火刑を掌中に復活させた。 By an act passed in the third year of the reign of his majesty George IV." that punishment is abolished, but the punishment of transportation for life, or for years, or imprisonment and hard labour, not exceeding three years, is extended to this crime; and it is understood that the highest infliction will be resorted to, if necessary, for the purpose of putting an end to a practice which is a disgrace to a civilized country. The terrors of the law may be usefully employed for this purpose, but moral culture will have its benefit, and the influence of the teachers of youth over the ductile minds of their pupils will be found not the least efficient instrument for effecting a radicall reform in what is emphatically called “the Lancashire way of fighting.” ジョージ四世陛下の治世（※1820〜1830）の三年目に通過した法令によって、その刑罰は廃止されたが、終身、ないし数年間の流刑、ないし三年以下の、懲役刑と重労働が、この罪に及んだ。そして理解されるのは、文明国に不名誉となる習慣を終わらせる目的の為に、必要なら、最高次の刑罰が用いられよう事である。法の怖さはこの目的の為に有効に用いられるかもしれないが、精神修養はその恩恵を持とうし、そして教え子達の素直な心に及ぶ若者の教師達の影響は「ランカシャー流の闘い」と強調して呼ばれるものに根本的な改善をもたらす為に最も有効な手段であると知られよう。 Another remedy has been suggested, and that is, by the influence of the upper classes to introduce amongst the people the “fair and manly mode of fighting;” but certainly the best remedy is to be found in the habit of abstaining from personal conflicts altogether.
