By ROBIN HOOD. 本国よりのスポーツ短信 ロビン･フッド筆 LONDON, Feb. 7. ロンドン、2月7日。 　… WRESTLING. レスリング。 The big wrestling tournament, catch-as-catch-can-style, at the Alhambra Music-hall, has proved a great success, a very large number of good men of all weights and dimensions having taken part in it. After lasting several days and furnishing some fine sport, the end came on Monday in the decisive triumphs for British wrestlers over the many foreigners who took part. Joe Carroll, of Hindley, won the middle-weights, beating the somewhat famous Peter Gotz (11st. 4lb. champion) in the final; Jack Carroll (nephew of “Joe “) taking the light-weights; and James Essen, of Aberdeen, securing the heavy-weights. Essen, who is only 22 years of age, stands 6ft. 3 3/4in.,weighs in condition 16st., and is immensely powerful. His opponent in the final was an extremely clever little “Jap,” Maido Yamato, who was, however, at a great disadvantage, being only 5ft. 6 1/2in. in height and 11st. 4lb. in weight. The chief prizes in the three divisions were respectively £25, £50, and £80—with a valuable cup in every class, added by Lord Lonsdale. 掴める様に掴め式の、大レスリング･トーナメントは、アルハンブラ音楽堂にて、極めて多数のあらゆる体重と寸法の強者達がそれに参加して、大いなる成功を示した。数日続いて幾つかの素晴らしい競技を提供した後、参加した多くの外国人達を凌駕した大英帝国のレスラー達の決定的な大勝利の内に月曜日に終幕を迎えた。ヒンドリーの、ジョー･キャロルが、中量級で優勝したのは、些か名の知れたピーター･ゴッツ（11ストーン4ポンド（※72kg）、王者）を決勝戦で打ち負かしてであった。ジャック･キャロル（「ジョー」の甥）は軽量級を制し、そしてアバディーンの、ジェームズ･エッソンが、重量級を勝ち取った。エッソンは、若干22歳、身長6フィート3と3/4インチ（※192cm）、体重16ストーン（※102kg）にして、大いに強力であった。決勝戦に於ける彼の相手は極めて機敏な小柄の「日本人」、前田大和、彼が、しかしながら、大いに不利な立場にあったのは、身長が5フィート6と1/2インチ（※169cm）、体重が11ストーン4ポンド（※72kg）しかなかったので。三階級の正賞はそれぞれ25ポンド、50ポンド、そして80ポンド…ロンズデール卿によって加えられた、階級毎の高価な優勝杯と共に。 An even better-class tourney, but in the Greco-Roman style, is now in progress at Hengler’s Circus, several first-class men taking part in it, and the money prizes being far more valuable. The winner—of course, in this style there is only one class—will take £200, second £100, third £80, fourth £50, and so on. This tourney is being engineered by M.
