George Hackenschmidt was recently challenged by Taro Myaki (the famous Japanese professor of jiu jitsu, now in London). In order to offset any idea that the Russian intends to meet any one under these conditions, C. B. Cochran, Hackenschmidt’s manager, wrote to the London “Sporting Life” as follows:―

　ジョージ･ハッケンシュミットが近頃挑戦されたのは三宅太郎（高名なる日本人柔術師範、現在ロンドン在）からであった。ロシア人が如何なる相手とも此れ此れの条件の下で立ち合うつもりであるという考えを補う目的で、C･B･コクラン、ハッケンシュミットのマネージャーが、ロンドン「スポーティング･ライフ」紙宛に書いた手紙は次の通り。―

“As to the Japanese method of wrestling, or, rather, art of self-defence―Hackenschmidt does not claim to be familiar with this purely Oriental exercise, and it would be as logical to ask him to fight twenty rounds with Jim Jeffries as to suggest his taking part in a Jiu-jitsu contest. If the Japanese wrestler wants to meet him on the Catch-as-catch-can style, as he suggests, Hackenschmidt will offer him special inducements.

「日本式レスリング、と言うよりは、むしろ、護身術、について言えば―ハッケンシュミットはこの純粋な東洋の運動になじみがあるとは主張しないし、彼にジム･ジェフリーズとニ十回戦を闘う様求める事と柔術競技に出場する様勧める事には同程度の道理があろう。もしその日本人レスラーが彼と掴める様に掴め式で立ち合うを望むならば、彼の提案通り、ハッケンシュミットは彼に格別な誘因を提供しよう。

He will back himself at the odds of 2 to 1, 1000 dollars to 500 dollars, 2500 dollars to 1250 dollars, or any amount that Myaki likes. As to the purse, percentage of gate or other monetary inducements that may be offered for the match, the winner must take all.

彼は自分自身に2対1の掛け率、500ドルに対して1000ドル、1250ドルに対して2500ドル、ないしは三宅の好む任意の額で賭けるであろう。賭け金、入場料の分配金や他のその試合のために提供されるべき金銭的誘因については、勝者が総取りとすべきである。

Without any reflection upon the ability of Taro Myaki or the justice of his claim to a match with the champion, I wish to make it quite clear that he must win the match to gain one pennyworth of remuneration. So many matches are now sought with no idea other than the loser’s end of the purse or gate in view that, in order to keep up the interest in and the quality of the contests, it is necessary that I insist on this.”

三宅太郎の腕前ないし王者との試合に対する彼の要求の当否をよく考えるまでもなく、わたしが全く明確に示しておきたいのはびた一文の報酬を得るために彼は試合に勝たねばならないという事である。余りに多くの試合が今賭け金ないし観客入場料の敗者の取り分以外知ろうとされないので、興味と競技の質を維持するため、わたしが此れを強く主張する事はやむを得ない。」
