James J. Jeffries and Frank Gotch are to begin a tour of the principal cities in the east soon, during which time they will both meet all-comers. After this tour Gotch will train Jeffries for his fight with Jack Johnson. Jeffries and Gotch are to appear jointly in a new musical play next year, which will be especially written for them. These two men are now under H. H. Frazee‘s management, who presents “The Time, the Place and the Girl” at the Colonial theater week starting Sunday

　St. Louis, Dec. 25.―In a fifteen-minute handicap wrestling match here tonight Frank Gotch failed to throw Con O’Kelly, champion of Ireland. Dr. Roller and Raoul De Rouen wrestled fifteen minutes without a throw. The police refused to permit James J. Jeffries to put on the gloves to box with Sam Berger.

　This golden harvest for Johnson’s future opponent is the result of an exceedingly liberal percentage contract which, according to those close to the Jeffries camp, yielded the big Californian an amount exceeding $3,000 on the poorest week of the tour and more than $5,000 on the best week, with an average of about $4,000. Gotch is working under a straight salary of $1,000 a week.

　“In order that there may not be any more talk about my plans I am going to tell the people just how I will train for Johnson and just why I think I can beat him.

　“I shall finish my tour of the country January 18 at Los Angeles, and then get in trim for Johnson. I have been advised to get right down to work at once―that is, start boxing and road work and keep it up until July 4. If I were to do that I would go into the ring overtrained and stale. No man in the world can stand a five and a half months’ training siege and be at his best.

I shall have Con O’Kelly, Gotch and Roller with me part of the time. Corbett will be with me during the last 40 days. The training camp will be run on a thoroughly businesslike method, with as few visitors as possible.

　“I have not decided just where I shall work. If the fight comes off in California I will do my preliminary training on my ranch at Burbank. If it is pulled off in Utah or Nevada I will work near the site of the battle. All this talk about my not being able to fight in Utah on account of the altitude is rot.

　“A lot of people believe that I am going to my slaughter when I take on Johnson. They say that it will be another case of Sullivan and Corbett with me playing the role of Sullivan. Sullivan was in no condition whatsoever. I am going to be better than I ever was at any time in my life.”

　良心的なシカゴの興行師は、ジェフリーズがボクシングしないことを正直に公表した上で切符を売ったようで、記者はそれをほめたのでしょう。
　“one night stand”とは、「一夜限りの興行」という意味です。もっともこの場合は、一つの所で一夜だけ興行を打つことを繰り返しつつ、東部から西海岸まで、全国を回っています。

　Kansas City, Jan. 3.―Frank Gotch is one athlete who believes that James J. Jeffries will return to the ring and remove one black spot from the pugilistic horizon. Frank, of course, is traveling with the former champion and naturally wouldn’t knock if he felt like it. But Francis says that Jeff is good―good enough to whip a whole regiment of negroes.

　“When you see Jeffries in Kansas City next Tuesday night you will agree with me that the big fellow is ready right now to fight for the championship,” writes Gotch to the sporting editor of the Star. “I have been with him six weeks now and every day I see him improving. Don’t think for a minute that he has lost his speed. He races around Sam Berger like a cooper around a barrel and he certainly has strength. I have been wrestling with him and can vouch for his strength. He considers this tour only a little preliminary workout, but, believe me, before he is through he won’t carry one ounce of surplus flesh. I have practically agreed to go to the hills with the big fellow when he begins training for his fight with Johnson. I don’t know whether I will be able to help him any, but I will give him the best I have. Wait until you see him next week and you will say that I have picked a winner.”

　ちなみにこの記事の上には、ウィリアム･マルドゥーンのコメントがあります。ゴッチ以前の米国プロレスの偶像でありながら、ボクシングの殿堂入りも果たしている人物です。彼はジョンソン推しでした。白人でもそういう人はいました。

　Sioux City, March 5.―Frank Gotch, world’s champion wrestler, easily defended his title in a match here last night with Con O’Kelly, heralder as champion of Ireland. Gotch won two straight falls from the Irish giant, who is six feet four inches tall. The first bout lasted twenty-nine minutes and the second went six minutes. Gotch at no time was in danger of losing a fall.

　スーシティ、3月5日。―フランク･ゴッチ、レスリング世界王者が、容易にその選手権を守ったのは、アイルランド王者と告げられた、コン･オケリーとの此処での昨夜の試合に於いてであった。　身長六フィート四インチの、アイルランドの巨人からゴッチは二本連取した。一本目の勝負は二十九分続きそして二本目は六分になった。ゴッチが一本を失う危険に晒された事は一度もなかった。

　Chicago, May 11.―Frank Gotch, champion wrestler, and James Jeffries, prizefighter, have become involved in a controversy over the services of “Farmer” Burns, but so far Jeffries seems to have the advantage.

　シカゴ、5月11日。―フランク･ゴッチ、レスリング王者と、ジェームス･ジェフリーズ、賞金拳闘家は、「百姓」バーンズの手助けを巡る論争に熱くなっているが、これまでの所ジェフリーズが有利に見える。

　According to word from Minneapolis, where Gotch is doing preliminary training for his battle with Zbyszsko, the mat champion is displeased over the refusal of Jeffries to allow Burns to leave Rowardennan to come to Chicago. Gotch wants Burns to help him train and unless Jeffries changes his mind Gotch will not join him at his training camp to help him prepare for his encounter with Johnson. Gotch’s manager left last night for Minneapolis, but before going wired to Rowardennan that Burns would be expected in Chicago by May 17.

　MINNEAPOLIS, May 11.―Wrestling Champion Frank Gotch has given up all hope of securing Farmer Burns to train him for his match with Zbyszsko, to be held at Chicago May 30. Burns will remain at Jeffries’ training camp. Fred Beell of Marshfield, Wis., will act as Gotch’s chief trainer.
　Gotch tonight threw Con O’Kelly of Ireland in straight falls.

　3度目の？オケリー対ゴッチ戦は、正規の試合形式である三本勝負ではあったようですが、スタニスラウス･ズビスコ戦のためのトレーニング中だったゴッチの状況もあり、記事中における扱いの悪さを考えると、模範試合のように見られたのかもしれません。


　フレッド･ビールは、ＮＷＡの系譜によればゴッチを破って第二代世界ヘビー級王者になったことになっていますが、ゴッチが「初代」世界王者となったはずのハッケンシュミット対ゴッチ戦よりも前のことであり、このことには田鶴浜さんを始め批判する人が多いです。当時の新聞を読んでも「米国選手権」となっています。

　Ben Lomond, Cal., May 23.―Frank Gotch, champion wrestler of the world, will join the Jeffries camp not later than June 5, according to a telegraph message to-day.

　After the strenuous Sunday Jeffries took things easily to-day. Early in the morning the trout fishing lure became so strong that the fighter devoted the day to beating San Lorenzo River. The only training was a run on the road.

Frank Gotch and Farmer Burns are both in the Jeffries camp, and are teaching him a few wrestling points. Corbett explains that Burns and Gotch are going to show Jeffries how to overcome a favourite trick of Johnson’s. When in a clinch he has been able with smaller men to swing them to one side and land a vicious right uppercut. Jeff, with his marvellous strength, is no child in close embrace, and his 240 pounds is not handled easily, but he is going to take no chances. When Gotch has finished Jeff’s training, the big fellow easily will break all holds Johnson may devise, and probably introduce some himself that the negro never even heard about.
