A wrestling bout between “Young” Piening and Professor Maeda, the jiu-jitsu expert, will be decided at Manhattan Beach to-morrow and the Japanese press agent has been busy. Here is his advance notice of the match:

　「ヤング」ピーニングと前田師範、柔術の達人、との間のレスリング勝負が、マンハッタン海浜にて明日決せられようとて日本の広報係は忙しくなった。此処に彼の手になる試合の予告文がある。

　“A POPULAR AMERICAN CHAMPION-WRESTLER WILL MEET WITH A NOTED JAPANESE JU-JITSU EXPERT AT ‘PARADISE OF JAPAN,’ MANHATTAN BEACH, ON NEXT SATURDAY EVENING, $3.000 BET.

　「人気米人レスリング王者が著名なる日本の達人柔術家と立ち合うは、マンハッタン海浜の、『日本の楽園』にて、次の土曜の晩に、3000ドルを賭けて。

　“The question to ascertain true quality of deadly tricks of Ju-Jitsu, a wonderful Japanese art of both self-defence and offensive movement, which has already been interested the people’s discussion; will no longer remain a mystery, when a formidable American champion wrestler, Oscar Dresodelf, or Young Piening or more widely known as the Brooklyn Butcher Boy, has met with a celebrated Jap Ju-Jitsu expert, Pro. E. Maeda, a national champion of Japan, and the instructor of Ju-Jitsu to Princeton University, on the ring, and challenge the contest, at ‘Paradise of Japan,’ Manhattan Beach, on Saturday evening, August 19th.

　「驚くべき日本の攻防両方の技芸、既にして人々に興味深く議論されている、柔術の必殺技の実質を確かめる問いが、もはや謎のままではいられぬであろうは、手強い米国人レスリング王者、オスカー･ドレソデルフ、言い換えればヤング･ピーニング或いはブルックリンの屠殺屋としてより広く知られる者が、名高い日本の達人柔術家、E前田師範、全日本王者にして、プリンストン大学の柔術教師と、マンハッタン海浜、『日本の楽園』にて、リング上で立ち合い、競技に挑む時、土曜の晩、8月19日である。

　“The challenge has initially been made by Young Piening to race his strength with Prof. Maeda, several days ago; and it has come to a good mutual understanding after the careful but gallant negotiation. Prof. Maeda has declared to the public to have a fight with any American challenger a long time ago, but in the meantime almost no one else has ever come out as a candidate of the contest, therefore, Young Piening as gallant and dauntless as he is to be, bited his lips, and made himself to Paradise of Japan and demanded for a challenge, and emphatically declared to the mass of gaping Japs, that he is sure to overcome this Jap Ju-Jitsuist within fifteen minutes, and throw him high into the air and whirl his rice-cake body like a ball, with the mixed styles, or he will agree to forfeit three thousand dollars, lost he was defeated by that Yellow Bull-dog.

　「挑戦は最初にヤング･ピーニングによって彼の力を前田師範と競うべく、数日前になされ、そしてそれは注意深いが勇ましい交渉の後で良き相互理解に至った。前田師範はかつて如何なる米国人の挑戦者とも闘うと公に宣言していたものの、その間ほとんど誰も他に競技の志願者として現われ出ず、それ故に、あるべき程に勇敢で不屈のヤング･ピーニングが、唇を噛んで、自ら日本の楽園に赴き闘いを求め、そして驚いて口を開けている日本人の一団に対し断固として宣言したのは、彼が必ずこの日本人柔術家に十五分以内で勝つ事、混合形式を以って、彼を空中高く投げその餅のような体を鞠の様に放り投げる事、或いは彼がその黄色いブルドッグに打ち負かされたら、三千ドルを没収される事に同意する事であった。

　“The contest will be taken place under the special auspices of Captain. Walter T. Asamy, a well-known authority on Ju-Jitsu of Japan, and the general manager to Paradise of Japan, whose capacity as a ring leader has been proved by a distinguished offering of the honoraly（※honoraryの誤植か） title of vice-president to the National Athletic Association of Japan.

　「競技はウォルター･T･エーサマイ海軍大佐、よく知られた日本柔術の権威にして、日本の楽園の総支配人の主催で行われよう、彼の土俵監督としての力量は全日本体育協会副会長の名誉称号の有名な申し出によって証明されている。

　“Young Piening when interviewed by the reporter assured himself, in a hot high air, ‘May be Jap’ll be stronger than that stupid Russian, but, look here. I’m an’merican and no Jap would stand with us,’ and tuned a soft, melodious whistle into the sky, if as he are sure of to be a winner.

　「ヤング･ピーニングは、炎天下での、記者会見時に確言して曰く、『事によると日本人は愚かなロシア人よりも強いんだろう、けど、いいかい。おいらはメリケン人でおいら達に歯が立つ日本人はいやしねぇ』と、そして彼は勝者となる事を確信したかのように、穏やかな、妙なる口笛を空に響かせた。

　“Prof. E. Maeda, a celebrated Ju-Jitsu master in Japan, also he was an instructor to the Kodo-kwan Ju-do School of Tokio, a famous institution for Ju-do, or art of Ju-Jitsu, whose cute stature is considerably smaller than even an average Jap in the town, and he looks no fighter at all; But when any one sees his wonderful muscle development and his steel-built frame, would doubtlessly believe of his capacity as a professional fighter. This little admirable Oriental fighter has expresed his own opinion rather sircustically（※sarcasticallyの誤植か）. When the reporter interrogated him, he said, ‘I don’t know whether I win or not, as I always believe, the result of contest evidently depend upon the chance, but you can imagine the effect of the contemplated fighting between Mr. Oscar Dresoderf and me on comin’ Saturday evening, when if you just remind how our great Admiral Togo has won of his tremendous naval battle without boasting himself, even a bit. Excuse me, I’m no boaster nor bluffer,’ and revealed a good, innocent Peek-a-boo smile which gave a characteristic ancient impression of the chivalrous Samurai.”

　「E前田師範、日本の名高い柔術の大家、彼もまた東京の講道館柔道場、柔道、ないし柔術の高名なる機関の教師であったが、彼の矮躯は町の平均的な日本人と比べてさえ相当に小さく、彼は少しも闘者には見えない。しかし誰も彼の驚くべき筋肉の発達と鉄の如くがっちりした骨格を見る時は、疑いなく彼の職業的闘者としての力量を信ずるであろう。この小さく天晴れな東洋の闘者は彼自身の考えを幾分皮肉を込めて表現した。記者が質問した時、彼曰く、『予は予が勝つか否かを知らぬ、予が常に信ずるが如く、競技の結果は明白に運次第である、しかれども我らが東郷大提督が、些少でも、己を誇る事なくその大海戦を如何に勝ちたるやをもし君がまさに想起する時、君は来たる土曜の晩のオスカー･ドレソデルフ氏と予との間の予期せらる闘いの結果を想像し得よう。相済まぬが、予は自慢屋にも空威張り屋にもあらず』と、そして、勇武の士特有の古代の印象を与える所の良き、無邪気ないないいないばあの笑顔を見せた。」

　当時は日露戦争の影響で日本ブームだったのか、「パラダイス･オブ･ジャパン」というパヴィリオン？があって、前田対プロレスラーの試合が、そこでの呼び物として企画されたようです。
　別ページ「東勝熊余話　米国篇」「1905.10.13　東勝熊 対 A･スワンソン」で、同じ夏に同じニューヨークで、「ドリームランド」という遊園地の「ジャパニーズ･シアター」に、日本人柔術家の東勝熊が出演していたことをご紹介しました。調べるほどに、当時の海外における日本人柔道家･柔術家の活動振りには驚かされます。
　当時の前田は、「光世」の前名「栄世」の音読み（有職読み）で「えいせい」を名乗っていたようです。海外のウェブ･サイトでは、“Esai Maeda”という表記も多く見られます。
　この時期ニューヨークでのプロレス記事には、「ブッチャー･ボーイ」こと、ジョン･ピーニングという選手の名前が見られます。「ブルックリン･ブッチャー･ボーイ」こと、ヤング･ピーニングは、その弟分、といった趣旨のネーミングでしょうか？

　残念ながら、この試合の結果を報じた米国紙の記事は見つかりません。

日本の達人が勝利。

　ATLANTA, Ga, Dec. 19―A wrestling match between S. Marburger, an American, and E. Maida, an exponent of jiu jitsu, was held here last night before an audience that packed the Grand Opera House. The Japanese won the first and third falls in twelve and eight minutes respectively. Marburger took the second fall, catch-as-catch-can, in twenty-eight minutes.

　アトランタ、ジョージア州、12月19日。…S･マーバーガー、米国人と、E前田、柔術の達人との間のレスリング試合が、此の地で昨夜大歌劇場一杯の観衆の前で行われた。日本人は一本目と三本目を十二分と八分で立派に勝ち取った。マーバーガーは、掴める様に掴め式の、二本目を二十八分で取った。



三本勝負の一本目と三本目がジャケット･マッチだったようですが、三本目は或いはコイン･トスでスタイルを選んだのかもしれません。
