Yousouf, “the Terrible Turk,” came near breaking the neck of Heraklides, “the Horrible Greek,” in the wrestling bouts at Madison Square Garden last night. The Greek was no match for Yousouf, who was nearly a head the taller and the heavier by eighty or ninety pounds.

　ユーソフ、「恐怖のトルコ人」が、ヘラクリデス、「恐怖のギリシャ人」の首を危うく折る所だったのは、マディソン方形公園での昨夜のレスリング勝負に於いてであった。ギリシャ人がつり合わなかったユーソフは、ほとんど頭一つ背がより高く八十か九十ポンドより重かった。

　Heraklides emerged from the dressing room apparently full of confidence. In striking contrast to the stolid demeanor of the Turk he bounded down the stairs into the arena in a theatrical manner, kissing his hands to the spectators as he threw off his coat, and circling around with outstretched arms like a ballet girl as he came toward the mat. The spectators cheered and yelled at him.

　ヘラクリデスが支度部屋から出て来ると見た所は自信満々であった。トルコ人の無反応な態度とは著しい対照をなして彼は芝居がかった作法の内に試合場に入る階段を跳ねて下り、彼が上着を脱ぎ捨てた時には観客達に向かって両手で投げキスをし、そして彼がマットにやって来た時にはバレエの踊り子の様に両腕を広げてくるりと回った。観客達は彼に喝采し歓声を上げた。

　When the men were on the mat Heraklides began the business by dealing the Turk some vicious slaps. Yousouf quickly got a grip on the Greek, and pushed him down on the mat. Then he got a strangle hold on him, and the next moment the bout was won.

　男達がマット上に至るやヘラクリデスがトルコ人に幾度かひどい平手打ちを食らわして闘いを始めた。ユーソフは素早くギリシャ人を掴んで、彼をマット上に押し倒した。それから彼は絞め技を彼に掛けて、次の瞬間勝負は決まった。

　When the Turk got off the little men the Greek was gasping for breath, and did not stir. Some thought his neck was broken. He was picked up by the arms and feet and carried off. On the way out he revived and was allowed to stand up. He made frantic efforts to get at his antagonist, but was finally taken away. This bout was Graeco-Roman, and lasted 37 seconds.

　トルコ人がその小男から離れた時ギリシャ人は息苦しげにあえいでいて、身動きしなかった。ある人達は彼の首が折れたと思った。彼は両腕両足を持ち上げられて運び去られた。退出中に彼は蘇生して立ち上がる事が許された。彼は死に物狂いになって彼の敵に向かおうとしたが、結局連れ出された。この勝負はギリシャ･ローマ式で、37秒続いた。

　Fifteen minutes later Heraklides came out for the second bout, which was catch-as-catch-can. Yousouf won it in three minutes and five seconds.

　十五分後ヘラクリデスが二本目の勝負の為に現われた。それは掴める様に掴め式であった。ユーソフがそれを勝ち得たのは三分と五秒に於いてであった。

Yousouf Has a Picnic with Heraklides in the Garden.

　Yousouf, the “Terrible Turk,” met in Heraklides, the “Horrible Greek,” last night, at the Madison Square Garden, a foe who was easy. The Greek, who had been picked out from among a number of husky push-cart peddlers, was heralded as a wonder, but it did not take long to completely explode him, as he was easily put down in two straight falls. There were 3,000 persons on hand to see the match, and their appetites were worked up by two preliminaries in which Charles Beck and Jack Casano wrestled to a draw, Graeco-Roman style, and Tony Lewis defeated George Richlieu in a catch-as-catch-can affair.

　ユーソフ、「恐怖のトルコ人」が、ヘラクリデス、「恐怖のギリシャ人」と立ち合ったのは、昨晩、マディソン方形公園に於いてで、敵はもろかった。ギリシャ人は、あまたいるしゃがれ声の屋台の行商人の中から偶然に見つけられた男で、脅威の人物と先触れされていたものの、彼が完全に化けの皮をはがされるのに長く掛からなかったのは、彼が二本続けて容易く下に寝かされたからであった。その試合を見るべく3,000人の出席があって、彼等の欲求をかき立てた二つの前座試合に於いてチャールズ･ベックとジャック･カサノが、ギリシャ･ローマ式を、レスリングして引き分けとなり、そしてトニー･ルイスがジョルジュ･リシュリューを掴める様に掴め式に於いて負かした。

　The Turk, resplendent in a turban and an odd-looking jacket, was the first to walk across the floor to a chair at one corner of the mat. There was no applause to speak of, but when Heraklkdes the “Horrible” appeared there was a sky-rocket cheer. The Greek wore a striped breech clout and went through a series of gestures and bows as he tripped lightly to his corner. His black hair was half a foot long, and his body was so well filled out with hardened muscles that the crowd cheered him again. He weighed 190 pounds, and the Turk 230. It was announced that the match would be best two out of three falls, the first to be Graeco-Roman, the second catch-as-catch-can, and the final bout a style selected by the man scoring the quickest fall. “Brooklyn” Jimmy Carroll was the referee.

　トルコ人は、ターバンと風変わりな外見の上着とできらびやかに装い、最初に歩いて床を横切りマットの一隅の椅子に向かった。言うべき拍手喝采はなかったが、「恐るべき」ヘラクリデスが現われた時には歓声がロケット花火のように急上昇した。ギリシャ人は縞の入った腰布をまとい一連の身振りとお辞儀をやり尽くしつつ軽やかに踊るように歩いて彼の隅に至った。彼の黒髪は半フィートの長さで、彼の体は鍛えられた筋肉によってとてもよく膨らんでいたので群集は再び彼に歓声を送った。彼は体重190ポンド、そしてトルコ人が230であった。試合は二本先取の三本勝負、一本目がギリシャ･ローマ式で、二本目が掴める様に掴め式、そして最終戦が最も早く一本を得た者によって選ばれた形式で行なわれよう事が発表された。「ブルックリン」ジミー･キャロルが行司であった。

　After the men shook hands time was called. The Turk showed his teeth, and the Greek bulged his eyes. His hair also stood on end like that of a dime museum Circassian. “It’ll be another fight!” many said in the crowd, as the Greek swatted the Turk on the cheek with his right hand. Closely the Turk followed his rival around the edge of the mat, both stooping and pushing with all the vigor at their command. Then the Turk rushed in with fierceness and grabbed Heraklides around the body. As he did so the Greek slipped to the floor, and Yousouf fell upon him like a load of coal. Yousouf’s immense right arm encircled the Greek’s neck, and, with slow pressure, he tightened a fearful strangle bold. The Greek sank down slowly, and finally settled upon his back. The referee slapped the Turk on the back, indicating that he had won the fall, and Yousouf jumped up, his chest swelling with pride. The Greek lay on the canvas, white as a sheet, gasping for breath. His seconds rushed over and picked him up, one having a firm grasp on his head and another clinging to his legs. Like a bag of oats, they carried him a few yards from the canvas, for he was helpless apparently. But he suddenly came to his senses and, realizing what had happened, he began to struggle to get back. Police Captain Sheehan ordered him to his dressing room, where his seconds told him exactly what had happened during the forty-seven seconds he had been in contact with the Turk.

　There was a rest of fifteen minutes, during which time the Turk sat in his corner and grunted complacently. The Greek explained that in the second “go” he would redeem himself, and when he came out he got another bit of encouragement. This time the Greek did not dance on his way to his chair, but walked along slowly, looking anything but cheerful. His seconds said he was nervous. The Turk laughed at him. As soon as they had been ordered to get to work, the Greek began sprinting around the edge at the mat. He threw in a dozen slaps, while the big Turk looked at him contemptuously. After a couple of minutes of this kind of work the Turk suddenly caught Heraklides by the arm and drew him to his breast. Then he tipped the Greek upside down, and with an ordinary body hold won the fall after 3 minutes and 5 seconds of wrestling. The “Horrible” got up quickly and ran out of sight. The Turk swelled his chest again and saluted. He had enjoyed what rightly may be termed a picnic.

　十五分の休憩があり、その時間中ずっとトルコ人は彼の隅に座って満足気にぶつぶつ言っていた。ギリシャ人は第二の「機会」に於いて名誉を挽回すると弁明し、そして彼が現われた時彼は今一度少々の激励を得た。今回ギリシャ人は彼の椅子への途上踊る事なく、しかし前へゆっくり歩き、全く陽気に見えなかった。彼の介添人達の曰く彼は神経が高ぶっていると。トルコ人は彼をあざ笑った。彼等が闘いを始める様命ぜられるや否や、ギリシャ人はマットの端を跳ね回り始めた。その大きなトルコ人が彼を蔑視する間、彼は十二度の平手打ちを放った。ニ、三分のこの種の動きの後でトルコ人が不意にヘラクリデスの腕を掴んで彼を己が胸まで引き寄せた。それから彼がギリシャ人を引っくり返して逆様にし、普通の胴抱えを以って一本を勝ち得たのが3分と5秒のレスリングの後であった。「恐怖の男」は素早く立ち上がって見えない所に走り去った。トルコ人は再びその胸を張って挨拶した。彼はまさしくピクニックと呼んでよいものを楽しんだのであった。



　二本目のフィニッシュは、パワー･ボムの体勢に持ち上げてから両肩をマットに下ろしてピンする技（スタンプ･ホールド）であろうかと思います。
　ヘラクリデスは、「黄金のギリシャ人」ジム･ロンドスの先達とも言うべき、ショーマン派の走りの選手だったようです。

Corbett to Second Yousouf.
コーベットがユーソフを介添えする事。

　Chicago, June 16.―(Special)―James J. Corbett will second Yousouf, the “Terrible Turk,” in the international catch-as-catch-can wrestling match with Evan Lewis, which will take place at Tattersall’s, next Monday night. It is said that this is the first time that Corbett has consented to act as second in either a wrestling or boxing contest. He is said to be well versed in wrestling, and hopes to give the Turk some valuable advice.

　シカゴ、6月16日。…（特報）…ジェームス･J･コーベットはユーソフ、「恐怖のトルコ人」を、来週の月曜の晩、タッターソールズにて行われよう所の、イワン･ルイスとの国際掴める様に掴め式レスリング試合に於いて介添えしよう。これはコーベットがボクシングないしレスリング何れの競技に於いても介添人を務める事を承諾した初回であると言われている。彼はレスリングにも良く精通していると言われており、トルコ人に幾らかの有益な助言を与えたいと望んでいる。



　コーベットはマネージャーを同じくするよしみでユーソフのセコンドに付くことになったようです。ユーソフ対ローバー戦でローバーに付いていたボブ･フィッシモンズは、コーベットにとっては前年にボクシング世界ヘビー級王座を奪われた因縁の相手であり、彼に対抗する意味もあったでしょうか。

　ST. Louis, June 19.―Yousouf, the “Terrible Turk,” threw Ivan Skobel in 1 minutes and 15 seconds and George Baptiste in 6 minutes and 30 seconds at Athletic Park last night. American wrestling rules governed. No one else would go against the Turk.

　セントルイス、6月19日。…ユーソフ、トルコ人が、イワン･スコベルを1分15秒でジョージ･バティストを6分30秒で倒したのは運動公園にて昨晩であった。米国レスリング規定が施行された。他の誰もトルコ人と対戦しようとしなかった。
