　I will wrestle Charles Moth, mixed styles, back hold or Scotch, Graeco-Roman and catch-as-catch-can, at St. Paul, for ＄100 a side any time next week, and will meet him at the Theatre Comique at 11 o’clock Monday night to put up the money.

　我がレスリングせんとするはチャールズ･モスと、混合形式、背抱え式即ちスコットランド式、ギリシャ･ローマ式並びに掴める様に掴め式を、セント･ポールにて、双方100ドルずつを賭けて来週の何時でも、しかして彼と喜劇場にて月曜夜11時に会合して賭け金を張らんとするものなり。

　The much talked of wrestling match. Graeco-Roman style, between Charles Moth and Wilkes McDermott, occurred in Market hall last night before a fairly large audience. McDermott was in very bad condition. He was too fleshy to make an athletic showing, and Moth had everything easily his own way. The conditions of the match were that Moth was to win five consecutive falls in one hour and thirty-eight minutes for ＄100 a side. Patsy Cardiff officiated as referee. Moth’s superior skill and strength at once asserted itself. He could deliberately lift “Mac” off the floor and gently lay him down. The fourth fall was a terrific one. Moth threw him so hard that the hall echoed, and the referee instructed Moth to exercise more care in the next fall for fear that broken bones might result. In the last bout Moth seized an arm and hammer-lock, when McDermott cried out, “I give the fall,” and quietly rolled over on his back.


　大いに話題となったレスリング試合。ギリシャ･ローマ式が、チャールズ･モスとウィルケス･マクダーモットとの間で、市場会堂にて昨夜まさしく大観衆の前で行われた。マクダーモットはとても悪い状態にあった。彼は運動を見せるには太り過ぎで、モスは何でも易々とやりたいようにやった。試合の条件はモスが一時間三十八分以内に五本連取すべきことに双方100ドルずつを賭けることであった。パッツィ･カーディフが行司を務めた。モスの優れた技と力とが直ちにものを言った。彼は悠々と「マック」を床から持ち上げて優しく下に横たえることができた。四本目は恐ろしいものであった。モスが彼を余りに激しく投げ付ける音が会場に鳴り響き、行司は骨折が起きない様に次戦はより注意して競技する様モスに指導した。最後の勝負に於いてモスは腕を掴んでハンマー･ロック、時にマクダーモットは大声で、「一本を諦める」と叫び、しかしておとなしく仰向けに転がった。



　関節技や絞め技を、現代では“submission hold”サブミッション･ホールド（降参技）と総称しますが、ガス灯時代には“punishing hold”とか“painful holds”と言ったようです。
　「ギブ･アップ」なり「アイ･クイット」と口で言う代わりに、自ら両肩をマットに着ける事で、負けを認める事があったようです（上記の試合では口でも言っていますが）。下記のページに書いています。
