物語　　1880年ころのアメリカ南部。ミシシッピー川をShowboatで町から町へと各地でショーを行っているHawks一家は、ある町にやってくる。そこで、娘のMagnolia(Nola）は、ギャンブラーで各地を転々としているハンサムなGaylordに出会う。They fall in love at first sight. そこで、２人が歌うのが、Make Believeである。Magnoliaは、黒人のJoeに今の男(Gaylord)を見たかと聞く、そして友達のJulieにどう思うか聞きに行く。
Joeはここで独り言をいう。
Ask Miss Julie what she thinks.
But I ask the Old River what he thinks.
He knows all about them boys.

そして、Old Man Riverを歌う。黒人達の苦しい労働のことを歌い、白人達の支配から逃れて自由になりたいが、それもかなわない。そんなことに構わないかのように、ミシシッピー川はいつもようにゆっくり流れている。恋で浮かれているMagnoliaの歌の後に続いて、黒人の苦しみと悲しみの歌が続くところがよい。このミュージカルを単なる愛の物語にせずに、深みを持たせている。
Magnoliaは、JulieにGaylordのことを話す。すると、Julieは、気を付けなさいと言いつつも、自分とSteve（実はJulie の夫でJulieと組んでショーボートで主役を演じている）の愛について、Can’t help loving that man を歌う。この歌は、実は黒人達が歌う歌であり、黒人女性のQueenieは、なぜJulieがこの歌を知っているのか不思議がる。その意味については、後で分かる。
Queenie: How come you know that song?
Nola: Why do you know it Queenie?
Queenie: But, sure I does
But I aint hear anybody but color folks sing that song
Sounds funny for me that Julie would know it
Nola: Julie sings it all the time
Can you sing the whole thing?
Julie:Of course I can. What’s so funny about that?

しばらくして、ショーボートでJulieとSteve達が出し物の練習をしていると、仲間が飛び込んできて、２人に保安官がやってくる教える。SteveとJulieのおびえた顔。突然、SteveがJulieの指をナイフで切る。そして、その指から流れ出た血を吸う。保安官とショーボートのオーナーCaptain Hawks達との会話。

Sherriif: I understand that you have a miscegenation case on board.
A case of a negro woman married to a white man. A criminal offence in this state (Mississippi).
The name of a white man is Steve Baker. The name of the negres is Julie Doldger.
Which one’s them?

Steve: I am Steve Baker. This is my wife.
Sherrif: Julie Doldger, my information says that you were born in Mississipi. Your pap was white, your mammy black. That right?
Julie: That’s right.
Sherrif: You two 'd better get your things and come along with me.
Steve: You wouldn’t call a man a white man that had a negro blood in him, would you?
Sherriff: No, I wouldn’t. Not in Mississippi. One drop of negro blood makes you a negro in these parts.
Steve: Well, I got more than a drop of negro blood in me. And that’s a fact.
Sherrif: Are you ready to swear that in the Court of Law?
Steve: I’ll swear to anyplace. I’ll do more than that.

白人と有色人種との婚姻(miscegenation) を禁じる法律が当時アメリカの多くの州にあり、白人と黒人の婚姻はミシシッピー州では犯罪とされていた(白人と日本人・中国人との結婚も同じ）。この問題をここで取り上げているところが、このミュージカルのすごいところだ。One drop of negro blood makes you a negro in these parts　という保安官のせりふは、聞いていてぞっとする。
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
Ｊｕｌｉｅの指から彼女の血を飲んだSteveは、黒人の血が体内に入ったということで、黒人扱いをされ、そのためJulieとの結婚は法律違反となることは免れたが、彼らはショーボートを去っていく。
ショーの２人の主役がいなくなり、急遽MagnoliaとGaylordが代役を務め、成功する。やがて二人は結婚し、娘Kimが生まれるが、その時、Gaylordはギャンブルで妻のもとには戻っていなかった。これからの２人の波乱の人生が示唆される。３人は、シカゴに移り、初めは幸せに暮らしていたが、ギャンブラーのGaylordは、財産を失い、妻子を捨ててどこかに行ってしまう。その後は、Magnoliaの苦労と歌手としての成功、また、娘のKimもブロードウェイの舞台に出る。その時、実はGaylordは、劇場の門番をしていたのである。娘のKimの舞台が大成功で、アンコールを求められたKimは２階の観客席にいる母親Magnoliaにアンコールの求めに応じて歌ってくれるように求める。Magnoliaが You are loveを歌うと、その歌声を聞いたGaylordが２階席の裏から合唱する。かくて２人はめでたく再会する。

＊　人種差別問題なども取り上げていて、単によい音楽と歌のミュージカルというだけではない、見る者にインパクトを与える作品であるが、恋物語の方は正直に言って、ありふれていてあまり面白くない。作品の前半と後半がチグハグである。
