Let's apply a nick name to the ideal exhibition center so that it can attract the many person's heart. 
However, it is quite difficult to conceive a excellent name.
Instead of it, I shall explained the passage to decide the nickname as gTokyo Big Sighth for your information. 

As I already wrote at gTokyo Big Sight !!!h(Japanese), the name of Tokyo Big Sight derives from "Õ(SAI=Festival)  “s(TO=capital) + site (exhibition hall)". I was a   secretariat in charge of nickname selection committee of gTokyo International Exhibition Centerh . 
To apply good name to the facilities or not, it is extremely a important factor  for the management of the center afterwards.

If it is mere PR, time is also good in this. However, applying a good name, and settling it connect directly with the increasing of the customer.

"Tokyo Messe" was a lot of proposals 
In those days, "Makuhari Messe" was a very novel name. The impact of that name was strong. Most people do not know that convention center when expressing, true name "Japanese convention center". 
Of course, we could not apply a similar name to the rival facilities to our exhibition center.

To tell the truth, the most important thing is choosing a suitable person of the selection committee in the case of this. Even if there should be very good candidate work, it is buried in the mountain of the proposal when the selection committee were not composed by person who has good sense . 

In case of Tokyo International Exhibition Center, not only the person related to Tokyo metropolitan government but also the designer and the exhibition promoter had join the selection committee. 

To raise the proposal, the advertisement was put on the professional journal related to the prize besides four large newspapers. This was extremely effective. A lot of proposals reached as soon as being published in the prize professional journal. 
However, the 200,000 yen reward of the naming of the exhibition center (its total cost of construction 189,000,000,000 yen) is too low-priced . It was fairly cheap compared with other advertisement for reward.  So I was shameful. 

Total of the proposals exceeded 6,000. And we thought it was impolite to pass all of it to the committee and entreat "Please choose from here". Our secretariats first examined closely first, repetition and the obviously inconvenient were excluded.
Actually, it takes six hours only to looking over all the proposals of 6432. All secretariats repeated this several times.
Still, we had narrowed it to 200 remainder finally. 

Because all the selection committee are busy, I could not hold the committee many times. 
Then, the narrowed candidate was passed to the selection committee beforehand, and each committee chose 20 proposals of his favor from among that. 

It decreased to 100 remainder by this. 
Then, this 100 remainder were examined closely at the committee, and the excellent ten works were decided at last. 

Next, we requested those ten works to the patent lawyer to investigate whether there was trouble in the trademark registration. 

I hear that the problem in the trademark had not occurred for the building iTherefore, the name like the rainbow bridge is appliedj. The exhibition center wants to handle nickname to the souvenir etc. put on the stall. 
Moreover, if the trademark check can be put beforehand, we can avoid being protested by other similar name users. 

Actually, after this check, 5 proposal within 10 was not able to be adopted. For instance, a name which have a good reputation in the selection process was certain clothes maker's brand name.

The opinion of the selection committee was affixed to five remaining works. Governor of Tokyo Suzuki decided its name  at the end as "Tokyo Big Sight". 

There were no characters of "Tokyo" in the adoption idea. But, we added "Tokyo" by me for merit in sales. Of course, the consent of the proposer was obtained. 
Having applied "Tokyo" were the result of considering "Makuhari" Messe. iHowever, most of those who come omit Tokyo, and call this center as "Big Sight"j. 



Based on the decided name, we asked acquaintance's designer for making the logo mark. 
One was decided by the vote of the staff from six . The logotype above is it. 
The rainbow symbolizes the rainbow bridge. Blue line is the sea. And, g¥hsymbolizes the tower building. 
I heard afterwards that  the designer found no word to say when he saw this logo mark on the lantern of the stall later. 

By the way, there is a symbol mark of the exhibition center besides this . 
We decided it  by the competition in the selection committee of symbol mark. 
It is a famous designer to have made that. 
However, by the author's demand, when the mark is used, it will be necessary to take his consent in detail. 
The use object is limited iThe lantern should be never permittedj. There were a lot of restrictions, for example the color of the background must be white or did not use that mark together the name of "Tokyo Big Sight" because I didn't not like it. The symbol mark was not used by these kind of things in fact. 
It is regrettable. Because it is a very good mark. 

We asked the selection committee for the eminent designer in Japan. However, they said, "If it is possible,  I want to make the symbol mark instead of to choose it". 

Similarly, it is likely to come to apply good nickname when "the ideal Exhibition center " is made. 
Maybe, it is a similar selection process. 

However, decide it hesitatingly if there is a really good name, and you are confident of it. 

By the way, YURIKAMOME-Line has been decided because of a forcible, top authoritative word "There is no name excluding this any longer". Even the name of the company becomes Yurikamome Ltd. now. I evaluate the resolution of the manager high. 

There is no guarantee that good name is given the center even if advertising. 
The people' who really pour love to the facilities can give it a excellent name.
