Y. University. Several hundred persons were present last night at the annual midwinter gymnastic exhibition held at the New York University gymnasium. The work of the competitors was of a high order, and showed that the local university will be represented by a strong team this season. The crowd was greatly interested in the jiu jitsu performance. April 6, 1905 http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030193/1905-04-06/ed-1/seq-12/ ボスナー戦当日の記事です。煽り記事、と言うべきでしょうか。 上段から中段に大きく写真があり、下段真ん中に記事があります。それによると前座試合としてハーベイ･パーカー対アレックス･スワンソンのレスリング、こが“Koga”対こま“Koma”の柔術が予定されていたようです。また、「ロシアの獅子」ジョージ･ハッケンシュミットの来場が予告されています（来たるトム･ジェンキンズ戦に関する記事がその下、並びに最左列にあります）。 JIU-JITSU GETS FIRST PUBLIC TEST TO-NIGHT The superiority of the Japanese jiu-jitsu science of defense and attack or the American catch-as-catch-can method of wrestling will be decided to-night at the Grand Central Palace, Lexington avenue and Forty-third street. George Bothner, the American light-weight catch-as-catch-can champion, will meet Katsuguma Higashi, the champion jitsu artist of the Orient, in a match that will be given to the one taking three falls out of five. The contest is to be decided by two judges and a referee, one of the former being a jiu-jitsu expert. Ever since the jiu-jitsu science became a fad with the American public it has been a much mooted question whether this art could endure against the attack of an expert catch-as-catch-can or Graeco-Roman wrestler. Bothner has been a persistent challenger of Higashi ever since the latter made a show of the crack athletes of the Police Department by literally standing the stars of New York’s finest on their heads. Higashi claims his only reason for not clinching the match sooner was the fear of doing the American a permanent bodily injury. Bothner’s taunts of cowardice stirred up the little Japanese, and the match was made. The rules under which to-night’s contest will be wrestled are a mixture of jiu-jitsu and catch-as-catch-can, but the falls will be decided on the plan that is best known to the American public, two shoulders to the mat counting a fall. Another contest is to be decided to-night that will hardly play second part to the Bothner-Higasha affair. Harvey Parker, the “Little Demon,” and Alex Swanson, of Harlem, two of the crack-a-jack light-weight wrestlers of this country, will meet in a finish match. The one who gains two falls out of three will be declared the victor. Swanson threw Parker a short time ago in a match at the Polo Athletic Club, but Harvey claims that he was not in condition then, and is confident of victory to-night. Another novelty that will be shown to-night will be a match between two Japanese wrestlers. They will wrestle in the native Japanese style, something that has never been seen before in this country. The names of the Japanese wrestlers, which does not make a whole lot of difference anyway, are Koga and Koma. Princeton University, of which Bothner is wrestling instructor, will send a big delegation to to-night’s contest, and Columbia will also be well represented, as the students of the local college are enthusiasts on the subject of jiu-jitsu. Either Johnny O’Brien or Tim Hurst will referee the match. W. Ford, who introduces the fact ostrich Jacksonville, with a record of 2:13. Next week Jacksonville will be raced against a horse. Several Cossacks also appear on the hippodrome programme in riding feats. In the Japanese Theatre Professor Higashi will meet this week the wrestler Hackenschmidt. It will be a match between two young and vigorous wrestlers, the former using jiu-jitsu against catch-as-catch-can. Of the two water rides at Dreamland, it is a question which is the more popular, the “Canals of Venice” or “Hell Gate.” The latter is the latest and newest and is drawing crowds. ボスナー戦後、夏の間は、夢の国（遊園地）の日本劇場に出演、柔術の演武を行っていたようです。ジョージ･ハッケンシュミットは、まだ在米していたのでしょうか。それともフランク･ゴッチとの試合記録のある、チャールズ･ハッケンシュミットという選手だったのでしょうか。いずれにせよ、その対戦は実現しなかったものと思われ、スワンソン戦が決定します。 1905.10.13 東勝熊 対 A･スワンソン この一戦に敗れたことで、東は米国に見切りを付けて欧州へ渡った…とも思われますが、およそ１ヵ月後にはパリのボストック･ヒッポドロームでの出演が始まっており、段取りが良過ぎる印象もあります。元々ドイツでの就学を希望していたこともあり、渡欧費用が貯まった後の予定の行動だった可能性もあります。“The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu”の出版契約、あるいは宣伝活動のための渡欧、という見方もできるでしょうか。東の行ったフランスでもドイツでも同書が出版されています（英国では“G.
