He seldom looks at his opponent squarely. His eyes seem to be directed toward the ground. He moves confidently and almost gently to the other man on the mat, extends his long right arm, grabs the wrestler around the neck and pulls him, half lazily. The other breaks away. The Turk advances, and again the right arm goes out. Again he grabs the other around the neck and pulls him or pushes him. Perhaps the other man tries the same game. Yousouf does not move until the other has a firm grip. Then he draws back his head and breaks the hold as easily as a man would break a boy’s. Again the long right arm goes out, and it keeps going out until he has tested the strength of his opponent. Then comes the clinch. They go to the mat, the other man underneath, and in a short time it is all over. A man who knows anything about wrestling will see that the Turk has skill as well as strength. There is no hold that he does not know, no hold that he cannot break with another trick instead of brute strength.

　彼は滅多に彼の敵をまともに見ない。彼の両目は地面の方に向けられている様に見える。彼はマット上他者に対して自信満々にかつ大抵静かに動き、その長い右腕を伸ばして、レスラーの首周りを掴んで彼を引き寄せる、半ばのらくらと。他者は逃げる。トルコ人は前進して、再び右腕を繰り出す。再び彼は他者の首周りを掴んで彼を引き或いは彼を押す。もしかすると他者が同じ策を試みるかもしれない。ユーソフは他者がしっかり掴むまで動かない。それから彼はその頭を後ろに引いて大人が少年の掴みを破る様に容易くその掴みを破る。再びその長い右腕が繰り出され、彼がその敵の力を調べ終えるまでそれは繰り出され続ける。それから組み付きが来る。彼等はマットに至り、他者が下になり、そして短時間の内に全てが終わる。レスリングについて何事かを知る者はそのトルコ人が力と同様に技能を持つ事を知るであろう。彼の知らない掴みはなく、粗暴な力の代わりに別の技を以って彼の破り得ない掴みもない。

　The length of time the other man remains before him depends not only upon the skill of his opponent, but upon Yousouf’s humor. Tom Clark stayed nearly twelve minutes. He said after the bout that the Turk could have thrown him in a minute as easily as in twelve.

　他者が彼の前にとどまる時間の長さはただ彼の敵の技能によるだけではなく、ユーソフの気分にもよる。トム･クラークは十二分近くとどまった。彼が勝負の後に曰くトルコ人は一分に於いても十二分に於けるのと同様に容易く彼を倒し得たろうと。

　“I knew I was gone the minute I felt him pull me toward him with one hand,” said Clark. “He is the most wonderful man I ever saw.”

　「わたしは彼がわたしを彼の方に片手で引き寄せるのを感じた瞬間に自分が終わったとわかった、」クラークは言った。「彼はわたしが見た内で最もすごい男だ。」

　Peterson went at Yousouf savagely. He lasted two minutes and forty seconds.

　ピーターソンはユーソフを獰猛に攻撃した。彼は二分四十秒持った。

　George Considine of Detroit was the referee last night. Parson Davies, not quite so rotund as in days gone by, hair almost white, was one of the timekeepers.

　デトロイトのジョージ･コンシダインが昨夜行司であった。過ぎ去りし古に於ける程には太っていない、髪ほぼ白き、デイヴィス牧師が、計時係の一人であった。

An Interesting Moment.
面白い瞬間。

　The only interesting moment in the bout was when Peterson dragged the Turk to the mat. He surprised the big fellow, and for a minute Yousouf was defending himself. Perhaps he was just preparing Peterson for a disappointment, for although the so-called champion pulled himself out of a couple of dangerous places, the big fellow put his shoulders on the mat with ease when he started to do that part of his work.

　その勝負に於ける唯一の面白い瞬間はピーターソンがトルコ人をマットに引きずり込んだ時であった。彼はその偉丈夫を驚かせ、一分間ユーソフは守勢に立った。もしかすると彼はちょうどピーターソンに失望の準備をさせていたのかもしれない、と言うのはその王者と言われる男は自身をニ、三度危地から逃れしめたけれど、その偉丈夫が攻勢に転ずるや彼の両肩をマット上に易々と着けしめたので。

　“Fall!” said Considine.

　「一本！」コンシダインは言った。

　The Turk never leaves room for doubt about falls, and he was still holding Peterson’s shoulders to the floor. Some of the spectators imagined that the Turk himself did not believe there had been a fall, and was still working for one.

　トルコ人は今まで一本に関して疑いの余地を残した事がなく、彼はなおもピーターソンの両肩を床に押さえ込んでいた。幾人かの観客が想像したのはトルコ人自身が一本の成立した事を信じていず、しかして一本の為になおも力を尽くしているという事であった。

　“He can’t understand English, touch him on the back,” said one of Yousouf’s handlers.

　「彼は英語を理解できない、彼の背中を叩け、」ユーソフの管理者の一人が言った。

　Considine did so, and the Turk jumped up, lifting Peterson to his feet.

　コンシダインがそうすると、トルコ人は跳び上がり、ピーターソンを持ち上げて立たせた。

　Dennis Gallagher, who has seen the Turk wrestle and who should know better, believes that he has a chance to win some of W. A. Brady’s money. He thinks he can throw the Turk in less time at collar-and-elbow than it will take the Turk to throw him catch-as-catch-can. Articles of agreement for a match for $1,000, to take place in Buffalo in one month, were signed by Brady and Gallagher.

　デニス･ギャラガーは、レスリングするトルコ人を見ておりよく知るべき人物であり、W･A･ブラディの金を幾らか勝ち得る機会が自分にあると信じている。彼はトルコ人が彼を掴める様に掴め式で倒すのに掛かるであろうよりも短い時間で自分がトルコ人を襟と肘式にて倒し得ると考えている。バッファローに於いて一月以内に行なわれるべき、1,000ドルを賭けた試合の為の契約条項は、ブラディとギャラガーによって署名された。



　「デイヴィス牧師」は有名なボクシングのプロモーターであろうかと思います。
