North Korea Defies
Warnings
of the World and the UN resolution
December 12, 2012
North Korea has
defied international warnings
with an apparently successful launch of a
rocket into space.
The rocket, launched at 09:49 local time ,
appears to have followed its planned trajectory,
with stages falling in
expected areas.
North Korea says a satellite has been placed in orbit;
the US confirmed an object had been put into space.
South Korea,
the US and Japan have condemned the launch
as a banned test of long-range
missile technology.
The US called it a "highly provocative act that
threatens
regional security", while UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon
said it was a "clear violation" of a UN resolution.
Japan has
called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security
Council. Reports
suggested this could take place later on Wednesday.
The launch comes a
week ahead of the South Korean presidential
election and roughly a year
after the death of leader Kim Jong-il,
on 17 December 2011.
'Extremely regrettable'
The three-stage rocket was launched
from a site on North Korea's
west coast. "The launch of the second version
of our Kwangmyongsong-3
satellite from the Sohae Space Centre... on December
12 was successful,"
state news agency KCNA said. "The satellite has entered
the orbit
as planned."
The rocket had been scheduled to pass
between the Korean peninsula
and China, with a second stage coming down off
the Philippines.
"The missile was tracked on a southerly azimuth
[angle].
Initial indications are that the first stage fell into the Yellow
Sea,"
a North American Aerospace Defence Command (Norad) statement said.
"The second stage was assessed to fall into the Philippine Sea.
Initial indications are that the missile deployed an object
that
appeared to achieve orbit."
The Japanese government, which put its armed
forces on alert
ahead of the launch, said the rocket had passed over parts
of Okinawa prefecture, south of the Japanese mainland.
"The missile
that North Korea calls a satellite passed
over Okinawa around 10:01. We
launched no interception,"
a government statement quoted by AFP news agency
said.
Japan had threatened to shoot down any debris which infringed
on its territory, deploying naval vessels and land-based missile
interceptors.
Its top government spokesman called the launch
"extremely regrettable" and something that Japan "cannot tolerate".
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, meanwhile,
called an
emergency meeting of his top advisers.
His foreign minister said the
government strongly condemned the launch.
The US called the launch
another "example of North Korea's pattern
of irresponsible
behaviour".
In China - which is North Korea's closest ally -
Foreign
Ministry spokesman Hong Lei expressed "regret" at the launch.
A commentary
from state-run Xinhua news agency called on all parties
to remain "cool
headed" and engage in "trust-building measures"

Japan Accuses
China
of Airspace Intrusion
over Senkaku
Islands
Dec.13,
2012
A Chinese government airplane entered Japanese airspace
over the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea
Dec.13, in
the first such airspace intrusion in
Japan.
It is the first-ever intrusion
by China into Japanese airspace
since Japan started tallying the number of
such intrusions in 1958,
according to the Defense Ministry.
Japan
has accused China of violating its airspace
for the first time after a Chinese government plane
flew
near disputed Senkaku Islands.
Japan lodged an immediate protest with
Beijing.
The islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu
in China,
have been a long-standing source of tension.
A total of eight F-15
fighters were sent after reports
of the presence of the plane, which belong
to China's State
Oceanic Administration - a state body tasked with law
enforcement in Chinese waters.
Japan's defence ministry said
it was the first intrusion
into Japan's air space by
a Chinese government aircraft
since the military began keeping
records in 1958.
Last year, two Chinese military planes flew near the
area,
but did not enter the country's airspace.
'Normal'
China's Foreign Ministry
spokesman Hong Lei, said during
a regular
news briefing
that the plane's flight was "completely
normal".
"The Diaoyu islands and
affiliated islands are part of
China's inherent territory,"Hong Lei said.
The Japanese government
spokesman said,
"We are determined to deal firmly with
action
that violates our country's sovereignty
in accordance
with domestic laws and regulations,"
Japan controls the islands, which
are also claimed by Taiwan.
Close to strategically important shipping lanes,
the waters
around the islands also offer rich fishing grounds and
are
thought to contain oil deposits.
The dispute over their ownership has
rumbled for years
but the Japanese government's acquisition of three of the
islands
from their private Japanese owner in September sparked
a renewed
row, triggering a diplomatic chill and public protests
in many Chinese cities.
Since then Chinese ships have
been sailing in and out
of waters around the islands, prompting warnings
from Japan.
It is clear
that
this is a move by the Chinese
side
to escalate the dispute.

Connecticut SCHOOL
SHOOTING:
Shooter Adam
Lanza Killed
20children
and 6 adults in
Conn.
Dec.15,
2012
Adam Lanza(20) armed with two semiautomatic pistols
killed 20
children at an elementary school
in a rampage that left 27 people dead
in a quiet suburban town before he took his own life.
Adam Lanza of Newtown, Connecticut was a child
of
the suburbs and a child of divorce who at age 20
still lived with his
mother.
This morning Adam Lanza
appears to have started his day
by shooting his mother Nancy in the face,
and then
driving to nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School
armed with at
least two handguns and
at least one semi-automatic rifle.
There
Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 children, who
President Obama
later described as between five and 10 years of age.
Six adults were also killed at the school.
Nancy Lanza,his mother,
was found dead in her home.
A relative said that Adam Lanza was "obviously not well."
Family
friends in Newtown also described Adam
Lanza
as troubled and described Nancy Lanza as very rigid.
"Adam Lanza was not connected with
the other kids,"
said one friend.
State and federal authorities
believe his mother may have
once worked at the elementary school where
Adam Lanza went
on his deadly rampage,
although she was not a teacher,
according to relatives, perhaps a volunteer.
Nancy and her husband Peter, Adam's father, divorced in 2009.
When
they first filed for divorce in 2008, a judge ordered
that they participate
in a "parenting education program."
Peter Lanza, who drove to northern
New Jersey to talk
to police and the FBI, is a vice president at GE Capital
and had been a partner at global accounting giant Ernst & Young.
Adam's older brother Ryan Lanza, 24, has worked at Ernst & Young
for four years, apparently following in his father's footsteps
and
carving out a solid niche in the tax practice. He too was
interviewed by the
FBI. Neither he nor his father is under
any suspicion.
"[Ryan] is a
tax guy and he is clean as a whistle," a source
familiar with his work said.
Police had initially identified Ryan as the killer.
Ryan sent out a
series of Facebook posts saying it wasn't him
and that he was at work all
day. Video records as well as card
swipes at Ernst & Young verified his
statement that he had been
at the office.
Investigators are looking
into whether Adam Lanza was carrying
his
older brother Ryan's identification at the time of the shooting,
which may
have caused the confusion. Neither Adam Lanza
nor
Ryan has any known criminal history.

LDP landslide win to return
Abe to prime minister's office
Dec.17, 2012
The Liberal Democratic Party will return
to control
the government it has ruled over for almost six decades
after
being out of power for three years and three months
with a landslide win in
the Lower House election on Dec. 16.
Shinzo Abe, who became LDP
president in September, will be
named the next prime minister in a special
Diet session
that is expected to be convened in the week beginning Dec. 24.
He will return to a post he abruptly resigned in September 2007.
The
ruling Democratic Party of Japan suffered a devastating defeat.
Prime
Minister Yoshihiko Noda announced his resignation as party
head late on Dec.
16 to take responsibility for the drubbing
suffered by his
party.
The newly formed Japan Restoration Party, headed by former Tokyo
Governor Shintaro Ishihara and Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto,
became the
third largest party in the Lower House, but another
new party, the
anti-nuclear Tomorrow Party of Japan, led by Shiga
Governor Yukiko Kada,
suffered a major setback.

S. Korea's Park Geun Hye
seeks Correct Historical View
December 21, 2012
South Korean President-elect Park Geun Hye on Thursday called on Japan
to have a correct view on history between the two countries.
At the headquarters of her ruling Saenuri Party, Park Geun Hye said
she will make efforts to promote reconciliation and cooperation in Northeast Asia
based on correct views on history, apparently referring to a territorial issue
between the two countries as well as their past.
Park Geun Hye met with the Japanese ambassador on Thursday,
expressing hope to improve bilateral relations, her political party said.
"I hope our new government and Japan's new Cabinet will
work together and take this opportunity to further promote bilateral ties,"
Park Geun Hye was quoted by the Saenuri Party as telling Japanese envoy
Koro Bessho.
Park Geun Hye met with Bessho at the ruling party's headquarters
a day after winning the South Korean presidential election.
In Japan, Shinzo Abe is scheduled to become prime minister next week following
his Liberal Democratic Party's landslide victory in Sunday's lower house election.
Park Geun Hye told Bessho that the two countries will foster stronger bilateral
ties by overcoming difficult issues, sources familiar with the meeting said.
Bilateral relations have been strained since South Korean President
Lee Myung Bak's visit in August to a pair of islets in the Sea of Japan
claimed by both countries.
Bessho presented her with letters from Abe, as well as Japan's
outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba.
Park Geun Hye praised the LDP for winning the election and thanked Abe
for earlier releasing a comment congratulating Park Geun Hye on her victory,
according to her party.
